At Christmas time my 3 kids put their money together to get Tom a gift card from a well known store that sells a lot of tools....won't name the name of the store but it's usually in a mall....hint! Anyway, he went to use the gift card today on a chainsaw and nobody ever activated it!!! I don't know what happened but what it comes down to is the store simply took my CHILDREN'S money from them and didn't give them what they paid for which was a gift card! I'm wondering if they simply pocketed the $ and just handed them a useless card. They've never bought a gift card before and had no clue that they had to do something to it for it to actually work. Tom got an 800 number to call and you better believe the person I talk to is gonna wish they didn't come to work today. We're not telling the kids because it will just make them feel awful...to think that they did this all on their own and were taken!!! I'm so upset I don't have words for it. I have no idea if the cashier took the money or if this store just pocketed some extra cash or what, but it's beyond ridiculous. It was Christmas and a lot of people buy gift cards!!!! To do this to my children was SO wrong and I am going to get their money back or that card activated one way or another!
OMG, I feel for the person I get in touch with. I'll be nice to begin with but they better give me some satisfaction or....or I don't know what! Wouldn't y'all be MAD as HECK TOO?

This has happened to me before. Luckily we still had the receipt to show something should have been on it.
But you made a good point. I bet some dishonest employees have done the pocketing the money without ever running it thru........I surely hope this hasn't happened to you guys!
If it has, the kids should know. It wasn't their fault but they need to know how to get a gift card for the next time. Or just say, always get a receipt for the amount paid in.
Good luck!

I'm glad you're not telling the kids. Once you get it "fixed" is soon enough to let them know that they need to be sure to get a receipt next time and that you'll be glad to hang on to it for them.
I'd be totally furious!

One can only hope this was an "honest mistake" on the associates part. I'd hate to think that someone would be so dishonest--though its hard *not* to think that way when its your money thats missing.
Hopefully by now you've had the issue resolved and your husband can go enjoy the gift that your kids so thoughtfully purchased for him at Xmas.
Let us know how this turned out!

Sales associates are really busy around the holidays, and a lot of them are temps. It is possible that the person who took the money just didn't know what to do. You might do better starting with that as an opening assumption, when you call -- plenty of time to get furious as the call goes on, and on. :) One really hopes that it was not some dishonest type robbing children at Christmas time!

This can deffinitely be fixed. Your kids should have gotten a receipt with the card. The cashier's register would have been "over" that day (assuming s/he didn't take the $), and it will be in the records of the store. If you know what day your kids bought it, it would be a help. The store would know who was on register that day. Anyway, I can't imagine they wouldn't give you a new one for good customer relations. BUT don't yell at the poor workers you get now, it's not their fault! I used to be customer service and you would not believe what people said to me!

heres my 2 cents for what its worth.. When you buy them they have to run it thru the register like you would be purchasing with a debit or credit card. The cashier may not have known that and her drawer would have been $$$ amount short. If you cannot git this corrected with out the receipt, maybe you could ask the kids for the receipt, if they ask why I would be honest with them and tell them some how it did not get activated.
Hope you get this straighted out.. I remember years back we bought some vhs (b4 dvd's) and there metal de activator's erased the movies.
good luck

They finally fixed it and I didn't have to yell at anyone. I have no idea what happened or if someone pocketed the money, but we didn't tell the kids because I didn't want them to be upset thinking they'd done something wrong when they didn't so Tom and I handled this. They are sending a new gift card, that WILL work this time for the amount purchased. They're going to look into it, as I know the day it was purchased and at which store, but not which register. It all worked out and they were very nice about it. I was just so angry thinking that someone had taken my children's money, and they very well might have, don't know for sure....but it's ok now....well, as ok as it will get.
