It seems that everyone reacts differently to this procedure. I can only share my personal experience.
The procedure took about an hour. General anesthesia was used. I woke up with a little bit of discomfort, though no pain. Urination the first couple of times afterwards was quite uncomfortable. I was discharged after spending an hour in the recovery room. Was sent home with a 2 days dosage of abx. I slept off the rest of the anesthesia, then went out to dinner with my family.
Some people find relief after a hydro, however I was not one of the lucky ones. I wasnt any worse either.
its normal to be frightened of the unknown. Try not to let your nerves get the best of you though--its not worth it.
Wishing you well...

I am sorry, I thought I answered you. The procedure went fine, much like Diana's. I get very sick from anesthesia, so I also went home armed with phenagran supps (like 12!) and some pain meds since my urethea gets so irritated. I took quite a few baths the first couple of days. Pretty much the best way for me to empty my bladder. Other than the baths, I either watched movies or slept for the next 2 to 3 days. The pain meds got me through the pain from the stretching.
I was hungry on the way home and insisted on going through the Taco Bell drive-thru of all things. I think the drugs were still working pretty well. Needless to say...I didn't eat the food from Taco Bell or anything else for a couple of days due to nausea.
The hydro didn't do anything for me either, but I was glad to have it done to know what my bladder looked like. I have had 2 hydros with the last one being about 10 years ago.
I always say to get as much rest as you can and take care of yourself.
I will keep you in my prayers. I know you are worried about this. It's only natural to worry about things we don't know about. I went into it with no knowledge the first time which was 20 years ago. The 2nd time, I had some valium beforehand and even better meds for nausea, so as far as I remember, the nurses were a joy and I was ready for the surgery. I don't remember a thing except for making sure my cath was out when they were waking me up and then going potty after I got back from the recovery room.
Hugs and prayers!

I've had 4.. None of them were really painful as I make sure that my doc knows to KNOCK ME OUT GOOD AND PROPER!!!!! After the 1st 3, I did cramp for a few days (maybe even a week or so) but then after the 4th one, I had absolutely no cramping etc. It always hurts a little during the FIRST urination after the procedure.. The first 3 really seemed to help me in the long run but the 4th one gave me no positive results and I am still in quite a bit of pain (since November).... I say, give it a try. The procedure itself is quite manageable and the result may be well worth it for you...

No worries my friend! I just did my first under anesthesia cystoscopy, and I am the biggest wimp ever! I was more scared of the IV than I was of the entire procedure! One thing that my uro did that was VERY SMART, was they put what they called a "Scope" patch behind my ear, which is basically a motion sickness patch, and I experienced very little nausea afterwards. I took it off this afternoon, and was kinda sorry to see it go... LOL.
I am having a little bit of urethra pain, and I can tell they did a biopsy because there are a few little specks of blood in my urine, and every time I go over a bump in the car, I get a little ouchie--definitely in my bladder.
They gave me a load of vicodin for pain, but I don't really like the drugged up feeling, so I took some celebrex this afternoon. It’s not as effective as the narcotics, but I was able to go to my daughter's parent/teacher conferences for a few hours. I am pretty wiped out now, but that's okay, I just drank a lot of seven up and took some vicodin, and I am back off to bed.
Really, the going under part is kinda silly... as per the medical team, the going under and coming back out take longer than the whole procedure! I can tell I've been through an ordeal... but really it’s not that bad.
I recommend you clear your schedule for a few days, so your body can recuperate... I am a HUGE wimp girlfriend, if I can do it, ANYONE can!
Sending you good thoughts, and lots of prayers!
If you need pain meds, do not be afraid to ask for them! If nothing else this whole ordeal has taught me... there's no glory in wading through pain when you can get help by opening your mouth! Good luck to you! Keep us posted!

Just wanted to let you know I'm in the same boat. Having my cysto/hydro done on March 11 - when's yours?
I'm nervous about the anesthia to, but having had an in-office "awake" cysto done 3 years ago, the only way I would have this done is under anesthia.
I also have a new uro and am pretty confident in her and her team so I'm nervous but feeling like it will be worth it.

Everyone is different as you know. Some receive lots of relief and others get worse from the procedure.
I can tell you when I had my last hydro I got a lot worse and had severe pain and lots of bleeding for weeks after. I had several ER visits..etc.
Now this I have been told is not the normal response but it does happen.
Good luck to you!

I was really scared for mine too....I am allergic to something in the general anethesia cocktail. Mine was fine...when I woke up from the surgery I had to pee (nurse's told me I didn't, but when I asked for and got a bed pan I really did have to go) which was a little uncomfortable, but they gave me Demerol in the recovery room and I was sent home with pain meds and Urelle. I had less pain, but more frequency/urgency for a few days (3-4) and then the pain back back with a vengance. It has been bad since. I did return to work the following Mon....after having it done Fri. afternoon, but probably should have taken another day to recooperate. Then again....my drs aren't even sure I have IC...so maybe my experience is moot.
Hope it goes smoothly, painfree and uneventful!!! Good luck.
