View Full Version : bleeding with instills?

I posted here a couple weeks ago about my uncertainty with performing my home instills. Today I went in to my uro's office for another lesson--this time the nurse made me perform the whole thing on myself under her guidance, with my fiance in the room helping. It actually went really well and I feel much more confidant about trying the procedure on my own at home now.

I also did not have the problem I had last time with not being able to urinate afterward. Yay!

However, when I went to the bathroom this evening, I noticed some faint pink blood on the tissue. It's definitely not that time of the month, so I assume it has something to do with the instills? Maybe I was too rough inserting the catheter and scraped my urethra? Has anyone else experienced this? I'm trying not to panic...I'm not in pain or anything, just worried.

I've personally never had this problem but I can see how it would be possible to scratch your urethra during the instill process and cause slight bleeding. Since you're not in pain I wouldn't worry about it too much but just call your dr's office in the morning and let them know and they can advise you from there. They might want you to do a culture or tell you that they have seen it with other patients before and not to worry about it.

This can happen. It could be a number of things including irratation from the catherter. You need to call your MD. Don't panic. It is OK to be aware and concerned when you are starting something new.

I have several instances where I would bleed with the catheter. It can be very irritating.
