I am getting my second rescue instill on wednesday. The first one I had on friday really helped for about two days. I had two problems with it. One- the Dr. told me to try and hold it for an hour, but I was unable to urinate for about 8 hours afterwards. Should I mention this to her? Two- while I did get almost instant relief, My urethra is very sore from the catheter - any help for this?

Yes, please mention it. I can't be cathed since it used to always cause me more problems than it helped. I used to always flare after any type of flare, especially DMSOs. When we tried a regular instill, my doctor thought that would do better, and I flared for days after that with alot of retention. The doctor may be able to do something to help you, mine tried everything, but some people just can't handle the caths.
Good luck toyou!

Do you know exactly what meds your doc is using for your instill? The reason I ask, when I had my instill at my urogynes office, I had alot of urethral discomfort also. I looked at the ingrediants on the bottle of heperin that they use and it contained alchcohol as a preservative. I started doing the instills at home and I have my pharmacist order me the ones without the alchohol, and it did not burn at all. Just a thought. I mean think about it, if you put alchohol on a cut, it is gonna burn like heck.

You NEED to tell the doc you could not pee for 8 hours after. This is IMPORTANT!!
No advice for the urethral pain, I'm in the same boat there. Ouch! Just the memory is enough for em to get all clenched up!

Somewhere I read about applying tea tree oil for urethral pain. I bought it at a health food store and tried it but it was too sharp and bothered me. Then I put 2 drops on a cotton pad I had moistened with warm water and applied it as a compress for a few minutes - it really helped! Anyone else tried this?
Thanks everyone for your replies - I will certainly mention inability to pee to my doctor tomorrow.

Some find lidocaine gel numbs enough to help you deal with pain in the urethra. There is also something called a urojet that is used to dispense lidocaine in the urethra.

I have lots of urethral pain as well with instills. The only thing I found that had helped was if they numbed the area really well before the instill.
Maybe you can ask your doctor if they don't already numb it. It was really painful otherwise for me.
Good luck!
