Hi, I take it, I started on 10 mg, which is a very low dose. I started taking it early, around 7:30 or 8, and I never had any reaction, I stayed on 10 mg for a month and then I increased to 20mg, and then to 25 mg per my doctors orders. I did fine with it and I know we are all so different in how we react, I was scared to take it to, I felt that I was already exhausted but I did fine with it starting at such a low dose. My body had time to adjust to it and I am glad I take it cause it has helped me so much. If you decide to try it, keep us posted how you do. Good luck. :)

Are you on it right now???
Are you having trouble sleeping??
I started with 10 mg and i found at first it made me a zombie but then i got used to it and now it helps me sleep and have a full sleep and it helps the painkillers work.....so if i have pain at least they take the edge off now for sure instead of not really working.....
so i am glad of that.....
I think i actually like it....
with every drug i find i have to have it for a long time to really know if my body likes it or not.....but as for right this second i do like it for the fact that it helps me sleep(and not get up too much to go to the bathroom) and to get the painkillers to actually work which does make me less insane.....
if you do try it and have trouble with side effects they say to switch to nortriptyline since it has fewer side effects......
if you have any questions or just want to vent send me a message....
remember we are all in this together....us against the medical system....
i hope you are doing ok
take great care
hugs n better bladder/body days

They gave me 25mg . I think I will cut in half. The reason I am wanting to start it is I am getting depressed. I think that is why I am tired and not want to do anything but just get home and sleep.....
I am starting it tonight. Thanks so much,

beceav,
my doctor put me on 50 mg after trying all other low doses...this is what has worked best for me...taking it earlier in the evening makes a huge difference to me, no later than 10pm or i can't get up easily in the morning! my doctor also told me it can take weeks to notice the full effects of the medication, so i stuck it out for a couple of months to see and i'm glad i did...but not everyone has success with this med...

if you're noticing you're depressed i would talk to your doctor about it b/c some people can't tolerate the amitryptaline well and it almost causes the opposite reaction - which is making you feel really low...it is something my doctor warned me and my husband about when i started it and kept a watchful eye on just in case...
i was starting to feel that way and was crying a lot etc. - my doctor was very concerned, until i took a home pregnancy test and found out it was b/c of horomones, haha!

don't feel badly about feeling this way - it's a very hard thing, trying different meds to see what will work best for you...it's not a simple solution for each person, and it's frustrating some days :)

good luck with it...

the doses used when tricyclics, like elavil, are used for pain are too low to treat depression. If you are depressed, it may be necessary to add an SSRI antidepressant. So, if you are experiencing symptoms of depression, please talk to your doc.

That is true, my doctor just started me on a depression med cause Elavil at low doses does not treat depression, so they may want to give you something else for depression. :)

I was on 50 mg last month since I was having trouble sleeping through the night even on my Rezorem. For some reason, it kicked my butt the first time or 2, then I took it earlier like other people suggested, and I didn't even get tired, much less go to sleep. My body must metabolize things differently. I have to go off of it every couple of months so I can get the most out of it. I don't take it to sleep, just to help me with my anxiety about sleeping. I also take Valium. I have for years, one vaginally (broken up) and one orally before bed. I take Restoril now to help me sleep. My doctor just took me off Rezorem to see if I sleep better with Restoril. So far, so good. The only time I ever feel "zomby" like is the first few days when I initially take the Elavil. I don't think I am going to take it anymore since I am doing fine without it. I am slowly decreasing all my meds. I have even slept without sleep meds, just the valium and a 1/2 a pain med last night and a whole pain med this morning, plus my Prosed DS. I hope by the next couple of months, that Prosed DS and the occasional pain in case I have done something to cause a trigger.

Hi, is your 25 mg scored in the middle to be cut in half? Mine are not, my pharmacist tells me when I can cut a pill in half, I always ask to because some you can't. If you can't, you can call the doc and ask for 10mg's to start and make sure thats ok. Good luck!

Lisa is right, I don't think that they are scored down the middle for you to cut them in half. If you want a lower dose then tell your dr you would like to start out lower and work yourself up to the 25 mg.
From what I understand most dr's start you out on a low dose and then work you up. The local uro I was seeing at the time started me on 25 mg, I'm now on 50 mg. Everyone seemed to be shocked that he started me off on such a high dose. It made me tired for the first few days and then I did what everyone suggested and took it earlier in the evening and I was fine. I have a really high tolerance for meds though and seem to be able to adjust to all of them very quickly. It will make you tired for a few days but that's usually it. It doesn't even make me the least bit tired after being on it for about a year.

Please call your doctor before you cut any pill in half. And Amitriptyline comes in as little as 5 mg. You might want to ask about taking the lowest dose for a few days to see how you react. Just be sure to work with your doctor on this.

Hey I have been on Elavil for a year now but only a low dose of 15mg which I have got used to and recently had some more pain so my doc is alternating my dose....one night I take 15mg, next night I take 20mg and he wants me to do this for 2weeks before taking 20mg long term.
I am already feeling the effects and very sleepy but I know that this feeling will improve as I felt the same on 15mg but after about 3weeks the side effects stopped.

So stick with it for now I know feeling so tired is hard work when you have to do a job etc I find it extremely difficult and hate feeling sleepy but it does get easier.
