Hi, I hear cymbalta causes stomach pain, I went and seen my family doc today, he gave me xanax PRN to take if I really need it with everything going on, and he asked me first if I wanted Cymbalta? He said that would be more long term and if I thought I needed it more long term I could start it. I said no, but I would let him know if I changed my mind because I do take Elavil and I would give the xanax a try if I needed it. Then I read some of the threads on stomach pain and thats the last thing I need and then I thought about it and thought maybe it would really help me with everything thats going on. So if anyone takes this, I would like to know how it works for you. I would think Elavil even though a different class, does about the same thing, but of course I take such a low dose of Elavil. Thank you so much. :)

Lisa,
I know that some have had trouble with Cymbalta. But I have to give it a thumbs up for me. It really got me through a very drak time in my life. I had just lost my home and then was Dx with IC and Bladder rupture and then my lost my Dad. All of this happened within a year and 1/2.. I do not know what I would have done if I would not of had the Cymbalta to get me through.
But the funny thing is, I was given it because my GYN had heard it had helped people with their IC pain. I was actually going to go to another Dr for depression. But within a few weeks I could see how much this med was helping with my depression. I told my GYN so she uped the dose to 60mg and I continued this until just a few months ago. I have come to a place in my life where I am dealing with things better, So I tapered off it slowly. And I am doing ok. But I know if I ever start getting down again. I will ask for the cymbalta again..
I hope you find something that will help. I truly can relate..(((((hugs)))))

I just started taking this Saturday and I have to say it has made a big difference in everything. I did get very bad stomach pain but found out it was because for me wasn't mixing with the vicoden. Started taking daracet instead and the stomach pain is gone and I don't have any other side effects from it. Which is really a big thing for me since I seem to get all side effects with pills. I will say this too for cymbalta. It helps more with the bladder pain then the vicoden ever did and I don't ache all over either. I"m not dragging like before. Seem to have more energy but still need to sit down and rest once in a while, but then I'm back up and at it. I am very happy that I took the chance with it and figured out the stomach pain problem. You might not even have that side effect. It said on the infomration that came with mine it was a very rare side effect. Plus it also said it could be used for pain due to nerve damage. I'm just really blown away by how well this is working.

Thank you both! I guess you can take it with Elavil? He didn't even say anything about if I would have to stop Elavil because I said I would let him know if I wanted it. Thank you both again. :)

Hi Lisa--
When the tricyclics like elavil are given for pain, they are given at doses too low to treat depression, and at those doses they will not help depression.
The newer antidepressants SSRI's often work for both anxiety and depression. Many docs will treat patients with anxiety disorder, like say a panic disorder, with an antidepressant because they help and are non-addictive.
Some folks may experience an increase in anxiety during the first two weeks on an SSRI and sometimes mild stomach distress. These symptoms generally will subside within roughly two weeks, and patients often are told to stick it out for a few weeks to see if the symptoms go away.

Lisa, I was taking it with Elavil in the beginning and the Dr said it was fine because I was taking such a low dose of Elavil. I continued taking it when I switched to Tofrinal..
