Just wondering if anyone has seen or heard of this doctor in Marin County, CA. I have an appointment to see him on Friday, but after all I've read here about the diagnostic testing methods and importance of finding a great doctor I am very worried!! I do know that I do NOT want a hydro/cysto for diagnosis if at all possible...is it reasonable to refuse this, or will I get laughed at?
What sorts of questions should I be asking him?
Thanks!

I have not seen that doctor, but I can tell you that a lot of doctors are no longer using the hydro as a diagnostic tool, at least not as a first line diagnostic. I live in Santa Clara County and I go to Stanford. There I was diagnosed by symptoms and started on treatment, which has worked beautifully (Elavil). My doctor gave me the option of a hydro if I really wanted it to help define the diagnosis, or if the other treatments we started did not work (sometimes a hydro can help with symptoms, some rely on them as part of their treatment regime).
Just to kind of let you know what I went through -- When I went to the uro I took the PUF questionnaire, had a history taken and had a pelvic exam with the q-tip test and and ultrasound to see if I was retaining urine. From there the doctor laid out three treatment approaches -- (1) hydro/cysto under anesthesia; (2) DMSO or other instillations; (3) Oral medication such as Elmiron, Atarax, Elavil. Because I was in a lot of pain and needed to see some relief quickly, we opted for Elavil and I was much better within weeks, almost completely better within about three months (I dealt with frequency, urgency and pain).
So, I'm sure you'll see the PUF questionnaire, they will want to do a history and pelvic exam, and I would ask about the different treatment options available and what your doctor suggests. I'm sure that you won't be laughed at for not wanting a hydro! (but if you are, I'd find another doc) Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, I hope my doctor follows the same course yours did...sounds minimally invasive. With all I've been through recently (treating both this condition and a severe migraine condition) I am SO not up for invasive tests that will further stress my body which is already near its breaking point! I just hope I can make my doctor understand this without him thinking I'm a wimp!!
