I was wondering if anyone else experience severe bladder spasms when they get a catheter put in. I have had it done a ton of times and it doesn't matter what they try to use my bladder goes into severe spasms. I really try to relax but it is so hard when you know the pain it will cause after for days. They do use lidocaine but it is SO painful still. I won't let them use anything larger than a 12f either.
Just wondering if anyone else experiences this. What do you do?

I am the same! I have been putting off learning to cath because of this. I have 3 appts in a row 2/19 and the dr. says if they still hurt that bad he will not ask me to do any more. I cramp before I can get home.

Is this with DMSO instillations, rescue instillations or just general cathing? I personally experienced spasms with the DMSO instillations - but once I discontinued that treatment - did not have this problem while cathing any longer.
Some people do have reactions to cathing in general (my daughter being one of them - though she tends to flare - not have spasms) so if this is the case - this might not be a viable treatment option for you in any form.

Maybe you aren't holding the instill long enough for the lidocaine to do it's job? I usually hold mine for at least an hour, maybe longer if I don't feel the urge to go. There are a lot of meds you can take that will soothe bladder spasms such as hycosamine, muscle relaxers like Soma and Zanaflex, and some people use flexeril.

Hope this helps!

I can't be cathed unless absolutely necessary. Everytime I am cathed I have a flare. My file has do not cath on the front of it. One of the other doctors in my group tried to do an instill a year ago last October, and I went into a several day flare. I didn't have another flare until last September which was caused by hormones since I didn't have my depo shot in August like I was supposed to so my body had started ovulating. As soon as I had my shot, my flares/pain decreased within a day or so.

It doesn't matter who does it, or the size.

Thanks all for the replies. I talked to the doctor about it and he said it is very common with IC and all the other issues I have(see below). He is by far the gentlest doctor I have had. It still was very painful but I know he used the lidocaine and the a smaller catheter.
