hi.

i just had my second appel cocktail instill for what they think may only be PFD and not IC. the first time i had it, i had a hard time urinating and could not go at all for 7 hours after. they said that was an unusual reaction, but not unheard of. anyway...the doctor assured me it would not happen again.

well, i had my instill at 4:00 and now it's 9:00 and i have a lot of pain in my urethra. i thought these were supposed to make me feel better? i have had ZERO IC or PFD symptoms in about 2 and 1/2 weeks. and now, after this stupid procedure, i'm in pain. i think i have a worse time being cathed than anything. i just feel like this is the wrong treatment for me.

does anyone have a similar experience?

I don't have any experience with this. I do want to suggest that what you are feeling could be an irritation from the catheter or a UTI. There is always a possibility of infection after you are catheterized.

You should probably see your doctor, have your urine checked to see if you are running an infection, and talk about the future of these instills.

I hope you start feeling better. :)

I have alot of pain when they use a large cath, when they use the ped 8fr cath, I am fine! Anything else, I have pain. I won't do an instill if I do not have that small ped cath. It causes me spasms and urethral pain, but when I do have it, I don't have any problem and I have great relief. I would also worry about a UTI because one time I had a really painful instill and I had a UTI. It was SO painful! So its for sure worth getting that checked also, and find out what size cath they are using. Hope you feel better soon.

thanks for the response!

i actually took a 500mg levaquin right after just in case, so i dont think it could be a UTI.

i think i was just unable to fully empty my bladder until this a.m. at 7:30. so, i think that was causing the pain. plus, my physical therapist said the muscles surrounding my urethra are very tight and spasm. i'm sure the irritation from the cath just made them spasm like crazy.

anyway, i don't think i'm ever going to get one again.
