Hi all yesterday I had my very first instill, the procedure its self was painless, the NP was very gentle. after wards there was some burning, however I took 2 prosed before the procedure. I had some burning when I voided it out and pain off and on with spasms thu-out the day. My bladder felt very heavy.
My urethra had spasms, and felt like pins and needles poking for a while, then it felt like razors in the urethra.
later in the evening it seemed my flow was stronger and the amount was more
This morning I have some discomfort in the urethra and bladder but not like yesterday. I also am having some bladder spasms.
I will continue to do the next 5 weeks, I was told by dr god they can show me how to do it, and I can do them at home vs paying for the script, driving 30 mins to the office and paying for a visit to have it done.
I hope this is encouraging to all of you who are scared of having them done. I was there, but after weeks of pain, and doubling over in my kitchen floor crying in pain made my choice for me, and it beats the heck out of pain pills.
Thanks Cindy for your encouraging post. You are so strong and described the procedure very well. I will be anxious to see how you feel after five, as I gave up after 2 due to the razor blade feeling in my uretha.
Muxxer aka Gina just had her first instill on Monday too! I am going to forward her your post. I think she will get a lot out of it. She is just a doll and so sweet, you would love her. Although she is not new to IC, she did just have her first appointment with a Uro on Monday.
Thanks again! And you are so right, there comes a point where the pain and the pain pills get old. I would eat a dirty dish rag if the Dr. told me it would help with the IC.:lmao:

Betsy

I hope they do continue to help with the better flow and everything. I have been doing them since late '06 and they have been a tremendous help.

Hi, I hope they work great for you. :) I had great relief but only when they used the tiny 8fr, when they used the 10fr ped, I had urethra pain and spasms so I asked them to try and order the 8fr. I had NO pain at all with the smaller cath, no urethra pain or spasms but I did with the larger one. I even used lidocaine first. They really helped me and I hope they really help you to. :) Lisa

Cindy, I'm so glad they are giving you some what relief. I have been doing them at home for over a year, lidocaine and elmiron up to 5 x daily and they have really helped with the pain. I use the low-fric mens caths (they are longer than the womens and work better for me as far as self cathing) and they are great.
God Bless,
Bessie

so far things at doing ok... even after the funeral, Olive Gadern and 4 hours at my sil's last night, eating everything in sight http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c67/tigger_gal01/smilies%20page/duh.gif..
Don't forget, there are adjustments you can make to the rescue instillations if you find they are mostly helpful, but have some discomfort....
1. Non-latex caths really really helped. I didn't have any indication of latex allergy, but thought it might be worth a try & the nonlatex ones burn much less!
2. Surprisingly, increasing the size of cath to 12Fr instead of the pediatric 8Fr helped because it moved less & irritated the urethra less. Also, the liquid passed through it faster, so I had less time with the catheter in. I think for me, leaving the catheter in would be far more irritating.
3. I couldn't understand why the DMSO instills I had burned less than these rescue instills. The only explanation I could come up with was that I used Marcaine with the DMSO's, so my doctor agreed to let me try Marcaine instead of Lidocaine, even though he didn't think it would work. BUT it did work, Marcaine is much better for me.
4. I only held the instills 20 minutes for the first few months on the treatments (even though my doctor insisted EVERYONE was ok at an hour), then I gradually increased the time to about 50 minutes - and that works fine for me.
5. Also discovered that one of the reasons the instills burned at first was because I was refrigerating the sterile water, thinking b/c it had no preservatives, I should. Uh, no, my bladder REALLY didn't like the cold bath I was giving it. When I thought of it and asked the nurse, she was shocked that I'd had it in the fridge, told me to just keep it at room temperature & I was sooo much more comfortable after that.
6. I shower before the instill, rinsing really well, but don't use soap, because every single soap I tried irritated the vulva so much, I burned all night. The doctor told me to stop using soap, but to rinse really really well with warm water. The warm shower also relaxes my muscles, so inserting the cath is easier.
7. After the instill I rinse well with a bottle of warm water, and then rinse again after voiding the solution. If I have any external burning, I pat dry & use lidocaine gel on the outside only.
Hope you find some things that work for you! These instills have dramatically reduced my pain, pressure & frequency! - Kadi
