How do those of you know what your bladder capacity is? My Uro told me that when a woman is having the hydro/cysto done that there is no accurate way to measure the capacity because a woman has such a short ureter and the tube putting the water in leaks out a LOT from the pressure. Did I word that right? That really sucks for me because I really wanted to know how much I hold and they cant tell me.:confused:

That's strange I have never heard of a URO saying that.. I know mine was able to measure mine when I had the hydro/cysto. I think it held 500cc. But without being under without the hydro it only holds like 200cc.

I usually expand to around 700 to 750cc.

Yeah but I wonder how accurate that is because so much spills out? Or does it..

My doctor never ever mentioned any spilling out.
Donna
Me either. My capacity under anesthesia 650cc during cystoscopy/hydrodistension.
In office cystometrogram - less than 200cc, then too much pain to continue...

I think mine was about 500 when I had the hydro done last year. I had the urodynamic test done in September but they did not say what my capacity was. The doctor did say that it was alot smaller than he thought. I need to ask him when I see him again.

Weeks before my cysto/hydro a urologist had me empty my bladder when I did the urine sample then he used a machine very similar to an ultra sound, moved it over my bladder and the machine read how much was still in my bladder. I am not sure how accurate that machine can be. All I know is I got a bill for that thing!

I know that a lot of people are told how much their bladder held during their hydro but I wasn't. I don't even know if it is listed in my chart from my old uro. He didn't normally take pictures and right before I was put under I had to ask about it. They said they didn't normally but I told them I wanted them to so they did and gave me copies. I wonder if I should have asked for them to note the capacity as well. I don't really care though because I know awake I can only hold about 4 oz before I feel like I have to go really badly. I know this is a lot less than what a normal person can hold. My hubby went to the bathroom one time while I was doing a voiding journal and I made him measure and it was four cups! I wanted to smack him silly, lol.

The bladder scan only measures what residual urine you have in your bladder, not the capacity and I'm not even sure if that's accurate.

I'm one of the 'not typical ic' folks. My bladder held 800mls during an office cysto. However, my urodynamics showed that I start to feel like peeing at about 30 mls, think maybe I should go at about 100 mls, but can hold it until 400-500 mls. So, my nerves are clearly oversensitive, but my capacity is normal. Yet, I'm under tha painful bladder umbrella.

I know that when I did a voiding diary that I could only hold less than 100 mls so I really wanted to know exactly what my capacity is.

that ultrasound thing said that I had about 4oz left after I peed. They said that wasn't very much though. Said that a normal bladder can hold 10oz.

I would have loved to know as well ltmiss, but you know all to well how FUN our DR's are...haha. Maybe i'll ask next month. What I do know is that I have an extremely larger bladder that doesn't empty well and causes me to go ALOT. BOO! which is abnormal for IC patients so i've heard.:loco:

I was curious about all of this too after reading about how much certain people can hold, etc. So I called my urologist who is out of town and they were happy to fax me the reports from my cysto and urodynamics and then my hydro/cysto. under anthesia. So I am sure most doctors would do this. Now I am trying to figure out what it all means:smile tee

I never was actually told either. Didn't know to ask, but I know during my uridynamics test, I was very uncomfortable after just a little liquid started filling. Now that I am doing better and actually empty my bladder about like a normal person, I measured my pee a few times and was able to empty 8 to 10 ounces at a time. It's not always that much, but for the most part I always feel empty and I don't have spasms anymore. This all started once the Prosed DS started working wonders for me!

Last March when I had a hydro the doctor told me I was able to hold 850cc, which was quite abit for me, as I usually can only hold 500cc under, and true to his exact wording the last time I had one it was 450cc.

This tread caused me to become curious as to what all the tests and procedures showed about my bladder when I was first diagnosed. I found all the doctor notes and findings.
My very first uro appointment showed that I had bladder residual measured at 80cc.
My next appointment showed a bladder residual of 21cc
My Pelvic Ultrasound showed a bladder volume calculated at 731cc with a residual at 22cc after voiding.
My Cystoscopy/Hydrodistention notes state that my bladder was distended to approximately 475cc. It was then drained and redistended to approximately 550cc then drained again. They then instilled 50cc of DMSO.

The prosed DS is like pyridium right? But you can take it for longer?

Yes, I have been on it since August and my doctor said that as long as it is working, there is no reason to quit. He won't give his patients more than 3 to 4 days worth of Pyridium Plus. I also have a liver function test done about once a year now. I haven't had it since taking the Prosed, but I haven't had any problems.

Thanks Tracy. My uro gave me permission to take pyridium for 2wks. I have been taking it probably 1x every other day. Not sure if it really works or not. I generally feel like crap all day long. Would love to be able to get on top of this, gotta go feeling, bladder pressure. I broke down and took a hydrocodone. New to this whole bladder stuff. Was able to get rid of the "gotta go feeling" in the past by getting pregnant and it worked for almost 2 yrs each time. Since I don't want anymore kids, I have to deal w/ it now. My gyn is thinking either IC or endometriosis around the bladder area. All I know is I can't wear anything around my waist, my bladder is so sensitive. And when he did the pelvic exam, my cervix was fine but when he pressed my bladder, it was the craziest feeling. Not pain but definately not right, lots and lots of pressure. I swear if felt like it was gonna fall out of me until I was able to take 1/2 a hydrocodone. Never want to feel that again!

I think you have us all interested in the Prosed DS. I just looked up some info on that. The only thing I have used is UTA capsule, AZO, and Pyridium. This sounds like it is more specific for IC symptoms. Have you tried these others? Thanks for your information on this

I just got out my report and this is what is says about the hydo: Distended until 100 cm, the output decreased and we measured the remaining at 750cc. Does that mean anything to anyone.
If you can't tell by all my recent threads I am trying to educate myself and pretty much treat myself w/ the information I am finding and taking to my doctor. So THANK you so much all your input. I am planning on finding us all a way out of this horrible disease.
Urodynamics:
voided 522 mls
post-void residual 110 mls (is this bad)
First sensation at 7 mls
strong desire at 181 mls
urgent desire/pain at 233 mls
Max. Capacity: 271 mls
FYI: MLS and CCs are equal......
Thanks!

Yes, I have tried several of the over the counter meds when I was in alot of pain and could get anything to help me, especially the AZO, but didn't have any relief.
With Prosed the first 2 weeks, I was really frustrated because I didn't see it was working, but all at once, I was as my grandmother used to say...."I was peeing like a race horse". Before Prosed, if I held my bladder for too long, I was definitely going to have problems emptying it in the first place, then I could count on the spasms. It does turn your urine blue, but I truly have been able to decrease my meds and even have taken more"chances" with food than I used to and seem to do okay. Still no citrus and I would love nothing more than to have a orange or a tangerine in the afternoon!
