View Full Version : How quickly did you recover after a cystoscopy?

I've just had my second cystoscopy (10th december 2007).
I had one last year (roughly the same time) although it wasn't as thorough as this one as it was done on a local anaesthetic.
This time, I was put asleep and they also took a biopsy. I was in hospital overnight.
Apart from a little pain a few days after the op, I felt slightly better for a couple of days.
However, soon after my pain had returned. The docs thought it was an infection so gave me antiobiotics. But the urine sample came back normal so i'm worried as to why I have my normal pains back.
Can I ask if anyone else took a long time to recover from a cystoscopy? because I'd like to stay positive and think that the pain is due to the fact that I might still be recovering. xx

It's been a long time, so I don't really remember for sure, but I was back at work within a few days. Did they do a hydro as well? Neither the hydro or cysto made my actual pain go away. I still had the same pain as before my surgery, I just knew what was causing it.

A few people take as much as two months to recover after a hydrodistention with biopsies. Most will feel pretty good after the first few days.

Hi, it took me atleast a month to recover from mine. My first one that I had, I had ulcers lasered off my bladder, so I had a catheter in for 3 days after that one, and I would say it took me a good month to recover. My second one even took me longer to recover, maybe about a few months, I had really bad spasms and pain after the 2nd one. I hope you start to feel better soon!

I'm usually fine and go back to work after a few days. (have them done on Thursdays and go back to work on Monday-- sure I'm probably not up to my 100% but my bosses don't really expect me to- so I just sit tight with my heating pad and work at my computer till its quiting time or I give up for the day- usually I stay the whole day as once I'm here I'm here-)

My cysto I had done in the office on a thursday and went back to work on Monday. The hydro is another story, that was done in the hospital and seemed like a couple week recovery.

You mean people RECOVER from them?!!! Just kidding!!! (Though that IS what I remember thinking when it took ME so long to recover from mine!") I remember my Dr. telling me I'd feel fine after a week or so, but I didnt feel anything close to "fine" for about 5 weeks! The whole event sent me into a really bad IC flare, and that may be the case with you too.
If you aren't feeling well, after the time table your Dr. has given YOU, you should definately make an appt. and go back in and see him/her, After all, you never know, it could be an IC flare, or an infection, or something else, even something new that mimics the feeling of an IC flare. So, it is always best to get these things checked out!
I do hope you feel better soon!
Hugs,
Amy

it took me a few weeks, i had to go to my local gp to get valium because my frequency shot through the roof and i was getting spasms. I never got spams before the procedure.

For my hydro/cysto I was back to feeling the way I had before the surgery in about a week. So if your pain is back to what it was before the surgery maybe that means that you have recovered and you're back to your pre surgery symptoms. I did not get any relief or reduction in my symptoms from the surgery. The only benefit I saw was that I got a diagnois for sure.

10 years ago I was fine after my cysto/hydro. This year (in October) I was fine for a few days then I was back in pain. (all urethra) After about 3 weeks my pain was gone. Pyridium really helped me through those weeks.

Im in more pain than I was before by cysto / hydro. I too am getting worried that its made things worse not better. Mine was December 13th I think. Going back to the Uro on Wednesday for my usual rant. He told me that I had a perfectly healthy bladder. How can that be considering I wake up in pain and it now hurts when i pee.

Hi Ihurttoo
five weeks? that sounds about right to be honest. I had mine on 10th december 2007 and have only just started to feel better (january 9th) so maybe you're right.
I had really bad flares more regularly since coming out of hospital. The docs thought I had caught an infection but the urine sample came back normal.
I put it down to all the different foods i had over Christmas.
i've now altered my diet quite dramatically and i'm taking anti-inflammatories (diclofenac) and i've been much better.
i've actually had three pain-free days in a row. I hope I don't speak too soon though!
anyone else taking diclofenac? x

what is a cysto and a hydro?

A cystoscopy is a procedure the doctor will do to try and find out if you have IC. They insert a tiny camera into your urethra and fill the bladder with saline so they can see inside. If you are lucky like me, the cysto photos will show a red and angy bladder. Mine also showed hunners ulcers along the wall of my bladder. I say I am lucky because many people with IC who have a cystoscopy done won't show any problems at all. So they go on suffering without knowing what is wrong with them. Many go on to have hydrodistensions done in the hospital which I don't know much about, except that they are much more serious than having a cysto done in your doctor's office, which is a 20 minute procedure and you go home afterwards. A Hydro involves distending or stretching a person's bladder, they take tissue samples and they can be very painful!
Do you have IC and if so how did they diagnose you?

Pain isn't my biggest complaint. I do feel some pressure all the time, and when I hold 100cc or more... that is very uncomfortable. My first hydrodistention, I had significant cramping type pain for 2 days. I also had significant retention. The rest of that week, I didn't feel like the hydro did much for me, but it really did help in the long run. So, I guess I'd say a week before I felt better than before hydro. I never had a biopsy though... so that could make it take longer to recover.

My cysto was not bad at all and I had zero pain meds other than the 2 valium they gave me an hour before. I was fine within 2 days. I have such lovely pictures of the cysto and my red angry bladder to share with loved ones too!
