UTI not going away with medication.

Hey everyone

It's been a while since I have posted here, all was going well for the past couple years, the ocassional little flare here and there but nothing much.
And I believe its all due to Elmiron (i love that drug, even though it costs an arm and a leg. lol) Anyways Im here today because I have a UTI, I have been taking medication for 8 days now, 2 tabs a day, I have 2 days left to go and I was feeling like it was working until today. It seems like its coming back, I have that burning achy feeling all the time. I am taking sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (do you think they could make the name of the medication any longer?lol) I wanted to find out if anyone else here has taken that medication and if it worked for them , etc?
I have taken lots of UTI meds and everytime they worked (this was years ago though so I am not sure what those ones were.)
This is my first UTI in over a year, I was going strong for a nice while, hehe.

So if anyone could post and let me know if they have ever had to switch meds while having a UTI b/c it wasn't working, etc, I would love to know. Z

I don't normally get UTI's so I can't speak about switching meds. I have heard others say though that even when the infection is gone they still are left with bladder pain and burning. It seems it takes longer for an IC bladder to recover from a UTI than a normal bladder. I hope you feel better soon. :grouphug:

The doc put my daughter on that stuff for a UTI. She ended up with really bad diarrhea. She got dehydrated and needed suppositories so that she would stop losing so much fluid. The doc switched her to Amoxicillian and she recovered from the infection. I have been dying with a flare since Jan 2nd. They just discovered an infection and put me on Cipro. Three doses and I am not seeing any difference yet. They haven't gotten the culture back from the lab, so I don't know if they will change my antibiotic then or not. It is my understanding that it can take up to six months for your bladder to fully recover from an infection. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you feel better long before that. Get well soon.

Sometimes they have to switch antibiotics if one isn't working. If they are not culturing your urine when you get a UTI, in the future you may want to ask them to do that. I hope you feel better soon.

Hi, a couple years ago I had a UTI, they gave me Levaquin, well it wasn't going away so they had to switch it, not all antobiotics work and if they cultured it they should be able to see what antibiotic should clear it up. You may want to call them and let them know its not working so they can change it to something else. :) Lisa

Did they culture? Because if they did not, and just went by the stick in your urine, it may not be an infection at all. I took a lot of antibiotics unnecessarily because of "UTIs" that I later learned weren't UTIs at all.

Hopefully the infection is going away and you just have some residual irritation from it. Did they do a culture and sensitivity test to determine the best antibiotic to get rid of your specific "bug"?

I would call the doctor if you're still not feeling better.

Most definitely have them culture your urine if you are still symptomatic after you're done with the antibiotics. I was just diagnoses with a UTI a couple of weeks ago and the sulfa-trimethoprom (Bactrim, I think) wouldn't have worked for this one. I was given Cipro, then a long term dose of amoxicillian. Yes, it was a whopper of an infection.

My doc gave me another 14 Cipro yesterday. I have a hydro on the 28th, so he doesn't want to take any chances. My lab results aren't back yet, but I am starting to feel better (thank goodness) so the Cipro must be doing something.
Sunday night I was up every half hour to pee, the on call doctor insisted that I go to the hospital at 8 on Monday morning to pee in a cup. Huge snowstorm, gotta love MA, I pee in the cup and the NP hands me a Cipro and a water before she even does a dip. I've been peeing in a cup on a regular basis since I was six years old. I remember my mother holding it up to the window to look for cloudiness. She's gone now, but I have such fond memories. When my daughter had her first UTI at 14 and I made her pee in a cup so that I could look at it, she looked at me like I had 4 heads. :loco:Sorry about the tangent.
