I started seeing a new therapist who I like ALOT. The first few sessions were bringing him up to date on my crazy roller coaster life!! Now we are working on pain management and self esteem raising techniques (I am incontinnt alot now and it really affects how I feel and I have let myself go alot b/c of that), also trying to help my anxiety (it gets worse when my Urgency gets worse, makes sense right?)
He is suggesting mindfullness. He taught me one exercise (welcoming and even "talking" to anxiety, Urgency, Pain, anger, etc) and to learn the difference between thinking a though and thinking about a thouht (sounds weird at first, but is alot simpler than I though)
Anyways, I am seeing a difference already. Every time I get a nagging thought, for example feeilng insecure at a company party b/c I had to go to the rest room so much, I acknowledged the thought and accepted it and went back to the party feeling much better.
Just wondered if anyone else here practices Mindfullness, particularly for pain, anxiety/self esteem and new of any good books/cd's. I don't see him until mid January and would like to buy something soon.
Thanks!

Hey Rachel I have done something along those lines with pain before - if you let yourself feel it instead of fighting it, it's easier to deal with. I know it sounds crazy, but I've read that the more you fight it the worse it can be, whereas if you just allow yourself to feel it and go with it, it's easier to tolerate and get rid of etc. I suppose the more "mental" stress you subject yourself to by trying to fight the pain and be "angry" at it, lol, the more stress you are creating in total. Wow, I don't even know if I understand what I just wrote, lol :)

I just wanted to let you know I get what you're talking about and thank you for reminding me that it can be used for all sorts of situations!!! ;)

I am kinda like Tracey somthing along those lines with fatigue and exhaustion.
I would get so upset with myself and fight it so hard to the point I would make it even worse. Then I started to tell myself it is ok, just take it easy that day and rest or until I am feeling more energy. It does help me not to get overwhelmed with it.

But sometimes I have to go back and tell myself again because I try to fight it again. You learn how to do it but sometimes you have to start again to not fight it.

Sending hugs, Trish

It sounds like you are heading in the right direction. I'm glad you found someone who is helping.
