So it appears that there is a very good chance my 20 yr old daughter has i.c. - I took her to see my doctor today - and he strongly suspects this is what is causing her pelvic pain. She is scheduled for the PST on January 3rd.
She is a bit hard-headed :bonk: - but I am strongly suggesting that she start the i.c. diet now - we will see if she takes my suggestions :)
One question though - I never had the PST done - and she is concerned about the pain associated - can anyone tell me what this test is like?
Thanks!!!

Part of the test is not knowing what they insert into the bladder each time until afterwards so as to not create any expectations. I can tell you that when I had it done, they injected two different solutions into my bladder, one is going to be the potassium solution. The other one is used as a comparison and between the two, they should be able to tell if she will have more of a response to the potassium. When I had it done, it didn't cause me much pain, just some discomfort, but I was uncomfortable because I was just coming out of a UTI and my bladder was already irritated. They also have an ABC (anesthetic bladder challenge) test which some docs will give, where they actually put lidocaine in to see if it relieves the pelvic pain. If it does, then they know the bladder is the origin of the pain. I wish her well! :)

Oh I hope your daughter do not have it, but if she does, it is better to know about it and get some help with it. I hope she will listen to you.
Sending hugs, Trish

I hope she does not have it too. If so she is lucky to have you help her with it. Just offer her advice and a shoulder to cry on.

I have not had this done, but I have read here that it can be painful. From what I understand, if she reacts to the potassium, they will put a calming solution into the bladder.
I do hope she does not have IC. Continue to encourage her to begin the IC Diet now, just in case.

Oh that stinks! I hope she doesn't have IC but if she does at least she will have your knowledge and experience with IC to help her through it. I have had the PST done and it is uncomfortable but as Sharon said they do put a rescue solution in afterwards that I believe has some lidocaine in it to calm the bladder back down. It was really no big deal and I went to work afterwards without any problems. It is the least invasive procedure I had to diagnois my IC. I'm sure she'll be just fine. Keep us posted.

I hope your daughter doesn't have it, I know what you are going through. My 12 year old son has signs of this too, not as bad as me, but he does (frequency and pain). I keep him away from chocolate, caffeine and soda but it's hard to tell a 12 year old boy that he may have this and it's so hard watching your child go through it. I hope, like you, I can start him watching what he eats at a young age and prevent what I'm going through.
Good luck!

I had a potassium sensitivity test done this past week, and to be honest- it hurt..First of all, we all know that having anything in your bladder if you have IC is painful- now purposely injecting an irritant through a catheter is just wrong. After the injection of the potassium, I was asked to urinate it out. Awful. Then, I had to get the catheter put in AGAIN to inject the bladder wash- or numbing solution. The pain in my abdomen lasted about an hour, I was able to return to work but with some discomfort. The process is painful, but once it's over there is a little bit of relief.
Best of luck, I really hope she doesn't have it..My thoughts are with you

Thank you everyone for your comments and prayers - she will be having the PST done on January 3rd - I will be sure to keep you all posted - I am not surprised that the dr thinks she might have i.c. - I have suspected for 6 months but she kept insisting that she would go back to her regular doc "just one more time" - poor thing has been on more antibiotics and anti-infectives in the past 6 months than probably her whole life - (of course rarely has the culture come up positive) -
Thanks again.
