Hi,

I wanted to share this information I found out today from a leading Perinatologist who specializes in High Risk Pregnancies from Wright-Patterson AFB. He was a Lt Col and had been a doctor for a long time...and he took his time talking with me...an hour and a half. I wanted to share this information just in case someone is interested.

But, I went in to the appointment with high BP, 150/95 and they attributed that to nerves. I was really nervous that he would say my husband and I would have to adopt. Thank the Lord for this blessing.

If you're a praying person, please pray that when we decide (within the next year) to try to get pregnant that I don't miscarry and we have at least one healthy child.

I feel like less of a woman if I could not give this to my husband, who has been so forever patient with this whole process. Even though he said adoption would be ok, I know in his heart...he'd like our own (biological) child.

I was elated to find out that YES, my husband and I CAN have our own child and my health conditions would be monitored and more than likely, I would be okay, but high risk.

Here's what he said about IC, Medications and high risk pregnancy in my case:

There were six precautions we reviewed after looking at my entire medical history:

1. As soon as I become pregnant, do a 24-hour urine to evaluate kidney function and see if there is a large amount of protein or albumin in the urine.

2. Start me on a low dose antibiotic to prevent kidney infections called Macrobid that is safe during pregnancy. This should alleviate having to use Levaquin, which is contraindicated during pregnancy.

3. Daily Lovenox injections to prevent blood clots since I have the MTHFR mutation and have already had a blood clot in 2004.

4. In the second half of the pregnancy, monthly ultrasounds to monitor the growth of the baby.

5. The doctor said I could deliver vaginally or c-section because either way, it would pass the bladder on either side. He said if labor progresses well, then the optimal is to get an epidural, pain medications and deliver vaginally because a c-section would be more pain to have to recover from and harder.

6. Monitor my blood pressure because I have been hypertensive in the past. There are approved medications such as Aldomet for High BP during pregnancy.

7. Monthly urine cultures to make sure there are no UTI's or cases or Pyelonephritis.

Here's what he said about my medications (just in case anyone is wondering, but then it is always subjective to one physician):

1. Synthroid is fine, but might have to be increased because of hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy.

2. Replace Nexium with Tums or Zantac 150mg.

3. Phenergan is fine.

4. Senekot-S is fine also.

5. Claritin is fine as needed..but since our move to OH, I have not really needed it.

6. No Valium, but muscle relaxers such as Flexeril or Norflex are fine.

7. No Ambien, but Tylenol PM or Benadryl is fine.

8. Darvocet N-100 is ok in LIMITED quantities, and only after all other measures such as heating pads, pillows and Tylenol have not worked. Absolutely no aspirin or NSAID products.

9. No Wellbutrin SR..he stated that there were not enough studies in pregnant women to support the use of this drug and the risks would outweigh the benefits.

10. No Midrin for migraines, instead he said I could use Fiorcet or other Tylenol containing products such as Darvocet (although use Darvocet in LIMITED quantities to prevent withdrawal symptoms in the baby when he or she is born).

11. Make sure I am taking Folic Acid to prevent Spina Bifida and other birth defects while trying to conceive.

As for my concerns about my previous diagnoses and miscarriages, he said all three miscarriages since they were so early were due to having steroidal I.V. Solu-Medrol (Prednisone). I was given that each time I miscarried. He did some tests earlier in the week and I am completely able to conceive. My husband is also fine. And, the best news is that my SLE (Lupus) tests and criteria were NEGATIVE! YAY!!!

I asked about having had Toxoplasmosis and he said that because I already had an active case that my body has built up antibodies against it and it would be unlikely to reoccur. He said that I can't change our cat's litter box though during pregnancy. My wonderful husband, Aaron, will have to do that. :-)

He also stated that some people have improvement to their IC symptoms while pregnant, but that it would be fine to continue heparin and lidocaine instillations because it does NOT cross the placenta.

I am so thankful to God, this IC board and everyone here that is so supportive. Thank you for your constant support. Today couldn't have been a better day except for the day my husband and I do have our first child.
:woohoo:

Laura,

That means so much. Thank you! I was so happy to FINALLY be able to write something positive on here. It always seems like I am coming to this board with pains and problems associated with IC. I really wanted to jump up and down and scream when the doc told me it was fine.

Merry Christmas!

April

Yes it does! It is probably the best news we have gotten healthwise about my health in a LONG time. And, we're in a great place to have our first child with my high risks. They have one of the leading high risk perinatologists on base at Wright-Patterson. He was awesome. I loved it that he took over an hour to discuss precautions I listed.

And, yes, Aaron is SO happy. I did not want to have to feel like less of a woman if I could not for some reason, but Aaron always told me that it was okay. He said that if it risked my health, he did not want me to do that. He wanted me to be sure so that is why I did the consult.

Thanks, Sharon for your well wishes. I hope you're doing well!
