I took ya'lls advice and called ahead to my ic specialist i will be seeing friday and point blank asked if he will treat my pain. They said Dr evens does treat pain with many things including pain medication but that you have to sign some kind of contract??? and he will not mail the meds, i have to come there to pick them up each month. DONE. i think there might be hope out there. Dr.evens office could not believe my current uro did not give me anything for pain after my cysto. This is the most hopeful i have been in a very long time.thanks for all your support!

:woohoo: I am SO relieved you have an appt with Dr. Evans! He really IS an IC specialist!!! (So many Drs call themselves that, but arent really, but Dr. Robert Evans is the REAL DEAL! :) Even I have heard of him, and I live in Ky! Patients travel from many states away to be seen by him! He has given many lectures on IC at Pelvic Pain Conferences, has written articles, and I am thinking he chairs the dept there. He has also written a great deal on this subject. He is an authority on IC! I had NO IDEA HE was the Uro you had the appt with, or I could have told you without your calling that he does treat IC pain! (Many ICN members go to him.) From what I have read about him here, he uses many methods to treat pain (like most compassionate Doctors). Based upon reading some of his materials, and the advice he has given several of his patients, (plus the fact that he has several patients that do Rescue Instills at home), he appears to be very current and knowledgable on IC, and indeed, appears to be an expert! :D

Obviously, I (nor anyone else) can say what he will do for you, but I can tell you that there ARE a variety of methods available to treat IC pain, aside from the obvious one (narcotics). Depending on the symptoms and severity of the disease of each patient, most Drs. review a patients history on a case by case basis to decide if and when narcotic therapy is an appropriate step for pain management. In most cases, before a Doctor will commit to placing a patient on long-term narcotic therapy for pain management, they prefer to exhaust all other non-narcotic treatment options first for pain management.

But, I am SO glad you called the office and have the peace of mind of knowing that they DO treat with narcotics there! And hopefully, if they cant manage your pain in another way, he will r/x them for you! I really think this is the big break you have been waiting for, and we have been praying for for you! I am SOOO happy for you!

Please post after your visit and let us know how it goes! We will be waiting to hear all the details!

Love and hugs,
Amy

The contract they are talking about is a narcotics contract. I am on one. Each drs will differ slightly but it basically says you will only receive narcotics from him and at have them filled at one pharmacy. If you are in an accident or something sever happens and you need something stronger than as long as you get auth. from them before you fill it you are fine. Also mine requests that if I am going to have surgery or a procedure done that may reguire stronger meds I let them know ahead of time. Also, I have to do urine drug tests to make sure I am not using illegal drugs. Periodically, they will run a pharmacy audit on you and make sure you are only using 1 pharmacy and only getting rx's from him. When I broke my foot at the beg. of Nov. I just called the hospital he works at and spoke with the uro on call and explained to them what happened. They authorized me to fill them and then emailed my uro that they gave me permission. So as long as you only get pain meds from him, or with his authorizaton, use one pharmacy, and don't use illegal drugs you will be fine. When on a contract you must sign it each month when you are given your rx. Some drs will start calling them in after you have "good behavior" (don't violate the contract) for a certain amount of time. If you violate it that dr will no longer give you pain meds. Be careful when you get rx's from other drs. Darvocet, tramadol, ultram and hycotussin(sp)cough syrup will violate the contract. Hope this will help.

Wow ... thanks for that explanation .. I was wondering what the "contract" was that she mentioned.

I'm so happy that this dr will be willing to prescribe pain meds. At least you know that he's going to deal with all of your issues.
