Hi y’all,

I’m Kat, I hope to learn a lot here about how to handle this newest problem. So here goes my introductory post.

In 1997 (on a Friday the 13th no less!) while divorcing my abusive ex-husband he broke into my house and shot me from behind while I was running away from him. You can read the somewhat fuller story of that morning by going here http://www.katherinereece.com/abuse.html I try to be open about my past to help people realize how frequently this sort of thing happens.

Anyway, the gun was a .22 and a problem with being shot with a small caliber gun is that the bullet ricochets. The bullet bounced through my pelvic area, broke my right ischium, turned left and lodged itself in a mass of nerves and blood vessels. This is my most recent x-ray. http://www.paradoxdesigns.com/bullet_xray.jpg

Every doctor I’ve seen over the years has been clear that the bullet can not be removed due to its location. They are afraid of doing more harm.

I did remarry four years after the shooting to a ****wonderful**** man who takes very good care of me and is extremely supportive and helpful with all the problems caused by the shooting.

I recovered pretty well at first, but over the years this bullet among my nerves and the damage it did to certain nerves, including my sciatic nerve, when I was shot have caused me to develop neuropathy. Which brings me here, since the neuropathy caused me to develop IC.

I was just diagnosed last week by Dr. Alex Childs at the Pelvic Pain Center in Brookwood Hospital at Birmingham, Alabama. My GP didn’t know what the source of the new pain was and in my searching I ended up there. Great place, great nurses, and Dr. Childs was fantastic. If anyone gets a request for a Doctor in Alabama I can not recommend them highly enough.

I already take Lotensin for high blood pressure and I have a Lortab prescription for pain, I currently average a Lortab a day, but after 10 years of pain I have a pretty high tolerance for pain (dentists *so* love me! lol). Bad days are, of course, worse and I have had to go in for pain shots.

Dr. Childs started me on Amitriptyline, Elmiron, Vistaril, Cymbalta, Neurotin, Tegretol, and Baclofen. I’m supposed to start one new med a week to help pinpoint which med is causing any side effects. I’ve read some threads on Cymbalta here so I’ll also add that he did tell me to take 30mg each day the first week and then up it to 60. I started on the Cymbalta this week as he gave me samples to start on that. So far no nausea.

As far as the person and not the sicknesses! I’m a 48 year old, married, short fat and happy Grandma of one incredibly beautiful and astonishing smart granddaughter who just turned five ~sobs~ named Anna http://www.paradoxdesigns.com/family/img/2007pp07.jpg here’s my little cowgirl wannabe at a petting zoo last month.

When I quit smoking seven years ago I picked my crochet hooks back up (my Ma taught me when I was 12) because I needed something to do with my hands besides smoke! I crochet mostly for babies, and Anna of course, but I’m currently trying to figure out a 1869 crochet pattern for a gorgeous shawl and boy has the style of writing crochet instructions changed!

As you might guess from my name I am a major history geek, but ancient history only. My primary area of interest are the preceramic cultures on the north coast of Peru. I founded this website that was featured in Archaeology Magazine http://www.hallofmaat.com/ making this old lady mighty happy! I had to give up day to day control of the site to a friend last year due to pain but I still participate as much as I can.

Anyway! Thanks for having this place…. and I hope to learn lots here.

HI History Cat and Welcome!:welcome:
Sounds like you have been through way more than your share of pain and termoil! I'm glad you found a great, supportive man (I have and did too....isn't it great??)
WOW you are starting on tons of new meds. I hate trying new ones but Lord knows I take LOTS of meds too.
I also have Neuropathy and I take Lyrica for the pain, and it helps for the most part, but with Neuropathy some days are worse than others.
I'm here if there's anything I can help you with. Take care!

Hi Kat! Welcome to the ICN. This is a great place filled with wonderful people. I have been blessed to be a part of this board. It sounds like you have been through a whole lot of pain - both emotional and physical pain. It sounds like you have a very positive attitude about all that you have endured. I hope you are able to find relief from your IC symptoms very soon. In the meantime, please take care of yourself and let us know how you are doing.

Warm hugs,
Jennifer

Welcome Kat. You have an amazing story to share and definitely a wonderful outlook. I have to agree that your granddaughter is a cutie!

My son and new DIL just moved to Birmingham early last summer after they graduated (my son from Mississippi State and my DIL from the "W" in Columbus and got married 2 weeks later. My DIL is a nurse at UAB and my son is on his working at a local golf course finishing his training to be a golf pro. They just love Birmingham. My husband and I have visited there a couple times since they moved there. I never realized how hilly that area was. It is really a pretty part of the South. They can live there until I have a cute little granddaughter to spoil, then they better move a little closer!

Happy Thanksgiving!

:welcome: Kat. It's inspiring to read about your great attitude to life! I do want to object to calling yourself an "old lady" at 48, though! I'm not all that far behind you -- OW! LOL, just kidding really.

I'm so sorry you've been hit with IC after all your other experiences. It sounds like you have a good treatment plan already in place, and you'll be able to tweak it if necessary. Keep us posted with how you're doing.

Thanks for the welcome y'all. To answer a few things...

I *am* starting on a lot of new meds and I'm not really happy about it, esp after reading through the listings of side effects on some of the antidepressant drugs. Yikes! About an hour or so after taking the Cymbalta yesterday I got goofy as all get out! Jeff kept asking me if I'd been drinking under the table or something. I was giggling!

I like Birmingham ... for a city its not bad. I just don't like cities. Been a country girl all my life and hope to die one as well. We have six and a half wonderful wooded acres in Chilton County, which is right in the middle of Alabama where the farmers grow the world's best peaches. :smile tee or so the Chamber of Commerce says LOL but they are good and people drive here from other states during the peach harvest to buy them.

To the other southerners: I've read the diet pamphlet and I'm in shock. No sweet tea and no tomatoes?! http://www.hallofmaat.com/smileys/swoon2.gif

The calling myself an old lady is a bit of a joke. Jeff is seven years younger than myself, bit of a kick after all those years of being told how ugly I was to snag a younger man! http://www.hallofmaat.com/smileys/dancing_ballroom.gif

And to those of you wise and wonderful enough to recognize a truly gorgeous little girl ...well... you encouraged me so here's another picture of her..

My DIL is from Starkville, so she was quite scared with moving to a city, but has gotten used to it. She almost took a job at Vanderbilt and one trip up there, she was terrified! The actually live in the area where they built the new outdoor mall. Vicadia Hills or something like that.

I love your comment about tea (the wine of the South!). I can drink Luisianne decaf tea, but I don't drink more than a glass or 2. Lipton decaf seemed to still bother me a little. I can also drink mint tea, any brand of it as long as it's decaf. I can also eat cherry tomatoes, but not very many. I also have found that home grown tomotoes aren't as bad either. I am not a huge tomato fan, but I still like to have a slice now and then. Citrus is my main battle as far as the diet goes and of course citric acid is in so many things.

Well, again welcome and alot of us love to chat, so beware! LOL!

Thanks for adding another picture of your granddaughter! I have an oral agreement that I get to name my 4th granddaugther. Which is my son's way of telling me there is no way I will be naming any of his kids since they only plan on 2. My DIL's mom is a twin and her grandmother has an identical twin as well, so I have already put my order in for twin girls. Girls don't run in our family, so with my luck they will have twin boys, but that doesn't keep me from hoping and praying anyway!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Vicadia Hills or something like that.

Vestavia Hills ... its a very nice area!

I was really tickled they named Anna after me and the other grandmother, who I LOVE. My first name is Anna, but I've always gone by my middle Katherine or shortened to Kat.

I'm hoping I can still have tomatoes .... I've always been a tomato addict!
