Ok i've had my uti for about a week and half... I had gotten my period and thought it was a flare. The woke up at 3am last week with blood in my urine, it burned and I sat on the toliet all night bc drops were coming out. I had levaquin. Started taking it and it seemed to go away and then 2 days later i'd wake up and wham pain again. I'm wondering if my body is so used to the levaquin that maybe i need a different antibiotic?? I'm going to call my uro but im afraid it might hit my kidneys and then im in big trouble! My body is so tired and achy, I didnt feel like going out all weekend. I stayed home and slept all weekend. Friday night i watched tv and passed out at 10... slept till 1pm on saturday... woke up made lunch and watched tv i passed out again at 4 and slept till 8. Went to eat dinner with a friend and then came home at 10 and slept till 2pm sunday. Can ya tell my body is telling me i need rest? Geez, I woke up this moring at 3am of killer buring and piercing pain whie peeing. I tried to sleep and just when i passed out the alarm went off. im exuasted and dont know how im going to make it through the day at work. I cant take any more paid days off bc i only have 3 left and they have to last till january!!! I hate this. Why are we icer's so prone to getting uti's?? it seems like every week or 2 weeks i get one. I'm alwyas very cautious before and after intercourse and i still get them?! what do i do??

I went through that for about 3 months, it was H---. I finally got it under control with Cipro and Pyridium I had to take it for about 4 months straight. It finally went away. Yea I will keep you in my prayers.

I have had the SAME situation for about the last 4 months. My infection would not go away, and it was just revolving from e.coli through lactobacillus, through klebsiella pneumonia? bacteria. I know this because I started seeing an infectius disease specialist. They have more sophisticated lab tests for typing whatever bacteria you have, and it is very possible and likely that you may be resistant to antibiotics..At one time I was resistant to 7/9 antibiotics commonly used for bladder/kidney infections. If your urologist is really concerned about getting to the root of your infection(s), they they should not be offended if you ask for an infectious disease dr referral ( I don't think they will take you w/o one). Like I said, I never would have gotten to the root of my months-long infection had I not gone to an ID specialist.

Some of us have posted here about getting a more extensive culture called a broth culture from United Medical Lab (unitedmedicallab.com). You can send a specimen on your own without a doctor's order. This type of culture is much more accurate than the routine culture most doctor's do. They will send a report showing the antibiotics that are most effective for any bacteria found.

If you are getting repeated UTIs the chances are you are not being given the right antibiotic, they are not finding all the bacteria, or you are not treating it long enough. We understand that Quest Diagnostics is not doing a more extensive culture called "Urine culture, special, #3021". Many doctors may not be aware that it is available.

It is important to find all bacterial species, even those that show a small number of colonies according to the colony count procedure. Some kinds of bacteria are still pathogenic in low numbers, especially in IC bladders. And it may take longer than a week or even a month to completely get rid of the infection and allow the bladder to heal.

I think Dmannose is only beneficial for irradicating e-coli.
