Hmm, good question, how about asking your pharmacist? They usually know more about that kind of stuff!! ;)
thanks...but tried that and they never heard of it.
said that it wasnt even available in the UK so couldnt help. I got it from an american website.
i know a few ladies on here are trying it (the ingrediants are also in Cysta Q) so if anyone can offer advise that would be great!
dont want to risk getting pregnant!! x

What about contacting the Cysta Q company or Algonot and see what they have to say about it, or if they have ideas etc... ;)

the ingredients you're talking about are natural supplements, like vitamins. They are not drugs, and there should be no reason why you can't take a vitamin (or vitamin-like product) with a birth control pill. Doctors don't know much if anything about supplements and, at least in the US, are scornful of them, which makes me scornful of doctors on this score. But that is their narrow training.
Instead of just taking these 3 ingredients in a scattershot way, you might want to take them in one of two products that they're used in -- Cysta-Q or Cystoprotek -- both designed for IC and sold at the IC network. The ingredients are in combinations and in natural solutions, ie olive oil, that can be best absorbed by the body! You can read lots about Cystoprotek at www.algonot.com. I have been taking Cystoprotek for 8 months, along with aloe vera capsules from Desert Harvest (www.desertharvest.com) ALSO for sale here. Don't take regular aloe vera -- OR juice -- as it will give you diareaha. Those are the only 2 things I've taken for my IC, and I'm pretty nearly fine, along with IC diet and--this is important!-- hi PH water (Fiji and Evian).

Hi KJD,
I have been pain free for 2 months now and I have been taking Glucosamine with MSM and Quercetin for 4 months, I also take birth control pills and have been absolutely fine. My GP knows what vitamins I am taking and there was never any question of them interfering with my contraception.
Good luck with your endeavours. I think natural is the way to go and next time I see my GP I will be asking about weaning myself off Elavil.
For what it's worth,I live in the uk.

Be careful. Natural supplements can and sometime DO interfere with prescription medications, as do some foods. For example, you can't have dairy products with certain antibiotics and grapefruit reduces the effectiveness of some heart medications. There are drug interactions with Quercitin. If I remember correctly, it does interfere with the effectiveness of certain cancer drugs, but I don't recall reading anything about birth control pills. I recommend doing a Google search for "glucosamine, msm, quercitin" and "drug interactions". There is a lot of information out there about these supplements and any possible drug interactions.
I'm happy to report I have been taking glucosamine and msm for nearly a year now, and I am still in remission. I am symptom-free, so sometimes I forget I even have IC, that is unless I forget to take the supplements or I eat something with MSG in it (that's still a big flare trigger for me).
I am more convinced than ever that IC is caused by some kind of allergic reaction to something we eat or drink, but that's just me.

Where can you find the glucosmine/MSM/quercitin combo? I went to a vitamin store and they only had the glucosamine w/MSM.
Thanks

The combo comes in the right amounts, in a product made specifically for IC sufferers, in very pure forms in Cystoprotek, which is for sale on this site. You can read about the origins of it on www.algonot.com. You can't buy it in health food stores, only here or thru www.algonot.com. The man who created Cystoprotek, Dr. Theoharides, has been a guest at IC conferences 3X and you can read transcripts of his talks on the site, in the library, I think. I have been taking it, with aloe vera capsules, for 9 months, and I'm without symptoms.

You don't have to buy one pill with all three in it. You can buy MSM/glucosamine sulfate together and the quercetin separately. I'm only using MSM/glucosamine sulfate and it seems to be working. I get it at GNC. I like theirs because there are no other ingredients in it at all. You can get MSM/glucosamine sulfate and quercetin at any vitamin store. You just have to check the list of ingredients to be sure none of the other ingredients would bother you. I cannot take powdery pills so I have to get a version with just MSM and glucosamine sulfate which are both highly soluble in water. No fillers allowed. So far my frequency has gone from 29x to 19x in the past month. But I'm also on a very strict IC diet. After I get down to 12x I'll test the bladder coating properties of the glucosamine sulfate by eating some chinese food (no msg) which usually makes me worse by 5x.

How long before the combo begins to work?

I started taking it on Sep. 3. On Sep. 6 I was a solid 29x per day. On Oct. 1 I was a solid 22x, and on Oct. 10 19x. My monthly cycle messes things up, so it's not a smooth path downward. Note that I am very diet sensitive. If I follow the diet strictly and do not do anything else to make me worse I do get better. The big difference I am noticing is that I am not getting worse as easily as before. So it's a more consistent path downward than if I was just doing the diet and controlling activity. Exercise, yard work, any outdoor sports make me worse, so I have been having trouble getting better with diet alone. I have been doing much yard work in the past month and the pill seems to be preventing that from making me worse. I have not tried adding in foods much yet as I'm in a hurry to get better before ski season. I will post a long message with my results after I have done the chinese food test in about a month. Sorry if this is long, but I think this solution could work with people who are diet sensitive. Not sure if it helps with allergies or other aspects of this condition.

I hesitated before I replied back on this topic for a while but I stronly believe that for now I can say the MSM/glucosamine is definetely helpful for me.
It has been 2 months since I start taking it ( I ONLY take MSM/glucosamine - nothing else) and my condition improved 60-70%. I have days now when I am pain free or have very little sympthoms.
I take the MSM/glucosamine that Try2Cope initially sent the link to and I take it twice a day. I wasn't too careful with food since I could never see a major food trigger or I would flare only for a very short time. I could usually never trace my flares exactly as I had good or bad days regardless of the food I ate.
(but I don't eat spicy food and I barely ever drink - sugar is probably my biggest wise)
I recently got married (Sept 1st) and was concerned how will my bladder cope with more sexual activies as my BF lived overseas before we got married but even that seems good. I don't think my hubby is even aware of the IC as a condition, except that he knows I need to start slow and can not go trough marathon inercourse
The only thing is that the fact that MSM helped me is a good indication that I indeed do have IC. I was never officially diagnosed as my symphoms are 99% in urethra and not in bladder. Even Dr. Moldin diagnosed it as "non-specific urethrtis".
So far - I am much better! Marriage life is cool (if I knew this I would get married long :) time ago...and MSM is working so far!
IT is not a mirracle cure but it is helping like nothing before.
Thank you Trying2Cope!

So it seems it is ok to use Glucosomine Sulfate with MSM. I do have MSM gel too. I am taking CystaQ and am on the 4th bottle but I am still having burning. I believe this is the last bottle that I will buy. Is CystaQ different from Csytoprotek?

Don't think they could hurt a pregancy but by all means ask your doctor.
I take Glucoamine and MSM along with Quercitin and I am down to 12.5 mg of Elevil, most days are great I still try to limit bad foods for me like chocolate and acidic food with the 3 drugs above I have moved a moderate case of IC to that of mild. I buy my Quercitin at GNC and you can buy Glucosamine with MSM there too.

smiley,
how long did it take you to see an improvement with the msm/glucosamine/quercetin combo. I'm on week three and while the burning is better, I still have that pressure and feeling like I'm sitting on a tennis ball. I've been in this flare for nine months, so I'm guessing it will take time for this combo to work if it does.

For a better test.Try eating a couple of nitrate hotdogs and wash them down with a couple of cans of coke. This is a good test. The next day most ic sufferers would be in alot of pain.I did this last week and was in alot of pain for a day or so.So I know this is the best test for me.Yep.. I still have ic.

I love this. Women helping Women. You guys Rock. I have been taking vitm. for a long time and the way I started was one by one at first my bladder was going crazy. I hung in there for about 10 days and started feeling better then I went to another vitamin and was ok with that one, and I only started taking them once a day and then whent to 2 times a day. good luck

I eat a hot dog every day for lunch. It's one of the ten things I can safely eat. And coke would only make me worse by one. I am not chemical sensitive. For me it's more about how much digestive acids are needed to process the food I eat. Chinese food makes me worse by 5. I don't know of any food with a higher number. But, great idea! http://www.ic-network.com/forum/images/smilies/lmao.gif

Thats weird,I can eat chinese food no problem.Maybe where I buy chinese food they dont use msg.I know I do get headaches from msg sometimes.
Chinese food is one of the foods I can eat without a problem, hmm. And it doesnt make me urinate every 5 minutes.I drink ice tea with my fried rice too.No lemon or sugar though. The lemon will do a number on my bladder.

I do know that St.John's wort is not safe with b.c. pills. Quercitin is in the st. J's wort, but may not cause a problem, I don't know. I'm on Yaz and could not find anything on the safety of the quercitin and the Yaz. But i'm not having uh, "relations" either.
Oh dear, now I'm worried! I'm stopping taking Quercetin immediately!
Last thing I need would be to get pregnant!!!!

Hi Lizzie,
I couldn't find MSM listed on the Cysto bottle. Did you have the awful pressure in the vagina? I am having a bad time again, as I complained to you last week and sorry. My little vaca. was fun, but i was in awful pain the whole time. We were supposed to visit friends 5 hrs away this weekend, but I ahd to cancel. I can't take the car ride. It was awful coming home last week(3 hr ride) The pain in the vagina in now constant. Of course it was really hard to stay on the diet when eating out. I ordered steamed veggies (they came with something sprinked on top) and mashed potatoes for 2 meals. I am sticking with the AV and Cysto. but very discouraged this week. Went to uro. 2 days ago to follow up from Cipro and blood in urine. No blood at least, but he says this vaginal pain goes with IC.
Please help again.
Joanie
