Hi there -

Does anyone else have problems with their "rescue" asthma inhalers (the brochodilators) increasing their bladder pain?

I take Singulair already, and can't tolerate the steroid inhalers (they make my asthma worse), so when I occasionally use the Proventil inhaler, I notice I get worse bladder pain for a day or more! Yuck!

I haven't really noticed that. I don't really like inhalers, I take nebulizer treatments. I take zopenex in my nebulizer. Do you take pyridium? I had a blood gas yesterday to make sure the pyridium isn't causing methemoglobinemia. I've been taking pyridum plus for 7 years, and that is a side effect. One thing I notice, if my asthma is bad, my bladder gets worse, but it could be stress.

I'm not sure... I don't use my rescue inhaler all that much. I did use it for the first time in about 2 months the other day, and then had increased bladder symptoms for 2 days. However, I had also had a bit of Coke, which is a no-no, and also accidentally got some soy-based stuff, which I don't have good luck with. So I can't tell if it was the inhaler or not. I use the Combivent inhaler (albuterol & ipratropium bromide -- an anticholinergic that is supposed to help with cough/mucous production/bronchospasm).

I have also been using Advair (salmeterol/fluticasone) and Singulair for about a year and a half now, and both medications have made a world of difference... I went from having symptoms daily and using my rescue inhaler (at the time, Ventolin) 12-13 times a day to hardly ever needing one! I'm sorry that your asthma worsens with the steroids because it has helped me a lot. I haven't noticed any bladder stuff resulting from either of these.

I also carry a bottle of prednisone tabs around with me in case of emergencies, or in case I get a cold/flu, in which case my rescue inhaler doesn't work well... I've only had to use it once, thankfully ... I hope I don't have to now because I'm not sure what effect it would have on my bladder now that I am dealing with those kinds of symptoms.

hmmmm...I actually haven't noticed my IC get worse with the use of my puffer. But keep in mind we're all different. Hope you're feeling better soon.

I definately have noticed a correlation between when my daughter (6 yrs old)needs her inhaler and when she has a bad flare. Usually she only needs her inhaler when she gets a bad cold. I am not sure if she flares because her immune system is weakened by the cold or from the inhaler. I asked her Uro about the inhaler and he hadn't heard any other complaints. If you have any further info I'd be very interested.

My suggestion would be to talk with the physician who ordered the inhaler. If you're sure it's the inhaler causing the flare, I'm sure there other alternatives for the asthma. (I raised two boys with asthma)
