View Full Version : What the heck is wrong with my knee?

I swear, I feel like I'm falling apart! I kind of twisted my knee at some point this week at work. I remember that I moved funny and then had a very sharp stabbing pain in my knee. It has bothered me off and on the rest of the week walking up and down the stairs.

Well today it is much worse. It feels like it is swollen or stiff because I can't bend it all the way like I normally would. It almost feels like the back of my knee is fat. I know that sounds stupid but I don't know how else to describe it. My MIL said that is exactly how her's felt when she tore something in it and ended up needing surgery. Ugh. I don't even want to make another dr appointment at this point as they are $25 a pop and that gets expensive.

I just wish I was normal and health for once. I feel like my body is revolting against me. :help:

I had the same thing happen about twelve years ago. What my doctor had me do then was to rest that leg as much as possible for two weeks. Then if there was no improvement, to let him know. Many of those kinds of injuries will improve on their own.

In my case it didn't because I had torn the cartilage in the knee. I had it repaired in a very simple procedure. I was in and out of the hospital in about six hours, including time in the holding area, surgery, recovery and waiting for the doctor.

The best way I can think of to describe it is a spool of thread. If you look at the end of the spool, you will see a little notch which will keep the thread from unwinding when you're not using it. I had a little notch like that; what was done was he removed a bit of cartilage so it would be smooth again. I needed crutches for a few days.

Well thanks for the info Donna, hope it doesn't come to surgery, ugh.

Thanks Leslie, I have it up with an ice pack thing on it to try to make it feel better.

I should mention that most twisted knee injuries will heal on their own if given a little time. That's why my doctor waits two weeks before ordering tests.

If you have crutches available, that will help you take a little pressure off the knee to give it a chance to heal.

I had knee surgery last May for a torn meniscus and my symptoms are similar to yours. I could not bend my knee and also could not straighten it as well.

Google your symptoms and see what comes up. It just might be strained or sprained. Ice it and elevate it.

You might try putting an elastic support on it for times when you can't avoid walking on it. But absolutely, if it's not better within 2 weeks, you are going to have to get it looked at.

Believe me, I know how you feel. As soon as I got a little let-up in IC symptoms, both my knees went into a huge arthritis flare, and I developed bursitis in my heel. For the past 11 years, it's just been one thing after another, some of them not remotely related to others.

But, you know, this will get better. All I needed was 6 days on prednisone, and both knees and the heel are now working fine.

I really, really hope this gets better soon! You don't need more crap to deal with...

wow girl you sound like some walking disaster lately.i thought i was having problems.i don't have much of a choice when i am sick or in pain though because my hubby works all kinds of crazy hours and i have a 3 yr old and a 6 yr old,we moved out of state so i don't even have any family to help:cussing: .so i pretty much have to suck it up and go on with life, lol.the good thing about that is my pain tolerance has gotten much better.the only thing i can really do is take my meds, clip my tens unit on my clothes, and then once my kids are down for the night i can finally take a bath and lay down with my trusty heating pad.hope everything gets better for ya,jamie
