Men and women age 18 and older with certain urinary frequency and bladder problems are invited to participate in a University of Iowa research study on interstitial cystitis and painful bladder syndrome.

The study will compare the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication to placebo (inac-tive substance) in reducing symptoms. Interstitial cystitis is a chronic, painful inflammatory condition of the bladder wall. An estimated 10 million people in the United States are affected by interstitial cystitis and painful bladder syndrome.

People with increased daytime and nighttime urinary frequency who have never sought treatment are eligible to participate. Individuals also eligible to participate are people who have not yet received treatment for lower abdominal or pelvic pain associated with a full bladder but who do not have a uri-nary tract infection.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and men with a history of prostate cancer are not eligible to participate.

The study will involve approximately five visits to UI Hospitals and Clinics over 12 to 14 weeks. Par-ticipants will randomly be assigned to take the study medication or a placebo, and all participants will be asked to follow an educational/training program.
