Hi, The GI doc only told me to take the bentyl I had already been prescribed. In the past it seemed to stop an attack earlier. My IBS is getting much worse. I think Zelnorm is the other drug for IBS. When i have ibs i tend to go too much. Tlhey say fiber helps, and avoiding certain foods that bother you like caffeine and chocolate, tomato sauce, etc. Hope this helps. I still don't know much to do to get better.

A lot of people have both. If you scroll down further, you'll see a whole board devoted to IBS; I think it's under "Related Conditions." That's probably where you'll find most of the people who suffer from both.

HI Newicer!
I've had IC and IBS for over 30 yrs.....and neither are fun to live with! What helps me a lot is staying away from fatty foods. If I eat a fatty dinner I'll be in the bathroom with in 20 min! It's awful!
Staying away from choc. and caffeine.....as jenleigh stated...really helps too.
Take care.......

Yes I have IBS and IC. I have had it for a couple of years (the IBS), and if I'm not constipated I have diareah. They did have a med that you could take for IBS but they took it off the market. It sounds wierd, but fiber supplements seem to help me. And if I am going out to dinner I take Immodium before I go, that way I don't have any "accidents" after dinner on the way home. My IBS is just annoying to me, it's not really painful. I have bloating, and diareah daily. Sometimes when I have a bm I almost pass out from the excruciating pain, (like I am passing glass that is cutting my bowels) but this doesn't happen very often. I IBS and IC are related somehow, because as it turns out there are more people that not who have both. Make sure you drink plenty of water for the IBS, but not so much that it affects your IC. Also, following the IC diet has helped BOTH conditions for me.
Good luck to you, hang in there :smile tee

I had big problems with IBS years ago, but it subsided for awhile. Now I've got IC and the IBS is back with a vengeance! I've eaten very little all week b/c I'm so afraid of the pain and getting sick again. Going back to the Uro Monday tho and I may get him to send me to a GI doc to get the IBS under control. I don't know much about Zelnorm....what do you guys know about it?

Hi there! I've had IBS for many years - at least 13 years. I've only had IC for about 5 years (diagnosed for 4 years). I tend to not be constipated and be more on the loose side. I've had IBS so long that I'm just used to it. For the most part I don't have terrible pain anymore (maybe my IC meds help with that). I do sometimes get some really bad cramping - but it usually goes away after visiting the restroom. I don't take anything specific for IBS and just try to eat lots of Fiber.

Are you on any medications? I have constipation and bloating also, but I don't think I have IBS. I think I have Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. However, I also think my constipation is caused by the meds I am on at this time. I, too, don't have to eat anything to become constipated, but I am taking my meds every day.

It's almost as if the two go hand in hand. I have IBS as well...never formally diagnosed though. My mother has IBS too...no fun just adds to the discomfort of IC and will definitly aggrivate PFD as well...go figure.

My PT treats a lot of women with PFD who also have IC and she said that in every case of IC that the person also has IBS.

She has been around this issue for a long time and she was very adamant by saying that regardless of what you read in the literature, that IC and IBS almost go hand in hand.

I thought this was very interesting.

Hi there! I am a newbie also and have IBS/with constipation, gerd, ostporosis/with arthritis, uti's, vasodepressor sysncope, etc,,lol. I have had all these my entire life and I finally had a doctor tell me about IC. I asked if IBS and Gerd could be associated with IC and she said absolutely as the researchers are linking these three to autoimmune deficiancies. The funny thing is about 25 years ago I asked a doctor if my illnesses were due to autoimmune and he said no but you will just have to live with it,,,arrgggh,,,lol. Good luck, honey.

Hi! Joanne,
I myself have IC & IBS.
I am seeing a gastroenterologist, and for now he put me on Colace 1 in the Am and 1 at PM. He also put me on MiraLAX one measuring cap up to the line which is 17 grams in the afternoon mixed in a full glass of water. I have been doing this since Sept 11th, and my constipation is not as bad. I am not so bloated and feeling backed up anymore. I was only going once every 3 or 4 days, and this regimen has really helped me. He is sending me for an upper gastroscopy, and a colonoscopy to see how much inflamation I have.
I hope this helps you, and maybe you should see a gastroenterologist to make sure that you do have IB.
Good Luck!
I am not a doctor I just wanted to let you know what helped me...
