Hi there,

I have suffered dearly with IC. It is a horrid condition to find yourself with. I used to think my level 10 pain would never let up. This went on for 6 months or so. I knew I had to do something or I would never have my old quality of life back. I was on a mission to remove the pain!!! I did intense research, checking out anything/everything that I could find. I created a daily regimine from people's advice, one that saved me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please consult your doctor if you are concerned with any of these suppliments!!! Also if you are in pain at the moment try tums, they can help so much. With pain take the maximum amount allowed, take with water.
As I list the items needed I will explain why they are important in the regimine

*follow IC diet to avoid irritants ( take tums with ify food/drink)
Everyday:

*Drink water- have a large container filled and with you all through out the day and keep drinking!!! ( you must flush your system out- there are toxins in the body that are irritating to your bladder) Studies show that people with IC have bladders whose protective lining is defective. A defective lining allows irritants(food/drink) or toxins to burn whats under the lining. Toxins can include:smoke, pollution,& excessive hormone release in your system . If too much of a hormone is being released i.e. stress- this makes your system toxic. So keep drinking water!!

*Suppliments-
Everyday:

*4 pills or 2000mg. of MSM with Glucosamine ( by Springvalley at walmart-kind I use). This suppliment will help restore tissue i.e. tissue in the bladders lining. This can be taken in the morning along with the max allowed of Tums.
*4 enteric coated fish oil pills found at most stores/walmart( These help coat the bladder, then the tissue can start to regenerate without irrtants, toxins,or stomach acid slowing the process). These need to be taken after your first hearty meal or they could cause bloating!
*2 Cysta-Q pills (found on this site)
This contains Querticin and other beneficial ingredients. Take after meal.
*UTI-clear (sells online). This can help to eliminate UTI causing bacteria that may be imbedded in the bladder ining itself (maybe reason for why bacteria does not show up on tests at doctors. Bacteria may be present, but imbedded and undetectable.) When you have a bladder infection, the bacteria will attach itself to the walls of the lining, destroying it simular to the way a tooth is destroyed by bacteria. *I think that this one helps to cover all bases of IC(Take recommended dosage). use disgretion!!!
*2 Daily Detox pills (sold online). It is so important to detox your system. While doing my research, there was a woman who studied this condition for something like 10 years. She recommended a few of the above suppliments and she said that if your system is toxic, then taking these suppliments is like "putting good gas in a broken car!" So you must remove the build up of these toxins as they will build up in the system- forever leaving your bladder irritated with flares and the badder lining unable to regenerate itself. This step is crucial in my oppinion. Drink plenty of H2O as the pills loosen the toxins, you need water to then flush it all out.
*Tums (max allowed, no more) take maybe twice a day with a glass of h2o

*Mind and Body  (very important)
Have you been stressed out? Ths may mean that your hormones are not balanced. You need to get them ballanced. The hormonal system is very delicate, if nothing is done to restore this delicate system, you could remain toxic or even begin loosing your hair. Hormones will not be regularly released if you are chronically stressed. "Chronic" meaning continous, vs. acute which is "normal" stress from say an incident. ( IC has been linked with people who are and have been chronically stressed ). So what can be done? If you are very stressed and depressed your body knows it, you must change your gloomy thoughts. I would suggest comical movies to be added to your regimine. Laugh out loud, laughter is known for it's healing properties. Extremely funny movies I would suggest are: Saving Silverman, anything with Will Ferrel, Austin Powers, Ladies Man, etc. Anything you can do to feel better inside, but funny movies help change your mind set easily, so use them as a part of your new regimine.
It is so important to get at least 30 min. of cardio a day. This with a good balanced diet will help regulate those crazy hormones and help you feel like your old self. If you don't know of a good workout an example: a simple "at home" one. All you do is alternte jumping jacks with floor excercises.

First, strech out the body, touch your toes. Start with walking in place, count to 30. Now do jumping jacks, count to 30 or 40. Now on the floor do girl push ups for 2 sets of 10. Back to jumping jacks for 40 or 45 counts. Next do leg scissors on floor for 2 sets of 40 on each leg. Back to jumping jacks. On floor do ab crunches for 3 sets of 40. Maybe add on more sets or if not, cool down with streching of legs/back. Drink water during, and your done!!! If this is too straineous try a 30 min walk!!!
If your motivation is down, literally set an alarm. Just start your workout when it goes off, like a conditioned response (remember from psyc. class).

*Finally, you must have hope that you will get better, do not dispair- all of that is over now!! Move foward with a new happy, healthy lifestyle. Put your faith in the regimine and push away all bad thoughts, you have to, you really don't have a choice!!! Tihis is so important. A key part to healing. Meditate  on the word peace taking deep breaths (this does the opposite to your body of say, a panic attack). Put on relaxing music or a favorite movie while meditating/relaxing to createa comforting atmosphere. Sing songs, do a hobby, listen to relaxing music in the shower, order a favorite book or classic movie from Amazon, anthing to free your mind of all of this. I recently ordered my all time favorite movie, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." I love to watch it during the Autumn months. It was only $13 on amazon, I am going to watch it today and light a pumpkin spice candle!!! I also ordered a favorite book, "Little House in the Big Woods" I used to love to read this during Autumn too!! Do what ever you can to stop the bad thoughts. "Take a vacation from your problems." We all have to fight agaist the strong current of depression. :hi:

*Give this regimine about two months to work maybe more or less depending. I was feeling so good and back to my old self that I stopped the suppliments for about 3 months because I hate taking pills, I eat pretty much anything now and some very mild bladder discomfort came back so I have been taking tums and they are sufficiently working. No worries!!! I probabally will start the suppliments again but a lesser amount, just to make sure I will have great holidays!! :flower:
use own disgretion and always ask your doctor about treatments!!!
I wish you the absolute best!!!

If you are already on prescription meds, can you take these that you've recommended at the same time? Also, how do you get the ones you said you could get on-line? Right now I am on Elmiron and Elavil. Also a pain med and now Zoloft too. I'm also having problems with constipation because of the diet and meds, as well as, stress.

Agape: You should always talk with your doctor before embarking on a regimen that includes supplements and/or herbal remedies. Not everyone will react in the same way to them. It's also good to discuss your exercise plans with a doctor. Not all exercises are okay for all ICers. For example, if I were to try jumping jacks, I would be in a flare for sure. I need to stick to low impact exercise, such as walking --- and I avoid anything that will put stress on my abdominal muscles.

As far as the med's are concerned, ask your prescribing doctor what they think. For the suppliments on line, use a search engine to find the product you want.

Yes jumping jacks are not for everyone. It is only a example of a cardio excercise. Walking is good too

I agree with Donna, this is a regiment that worked for YOU. It's not necessarily going to work for anyone else. The jumping jacks would be the end of me...but yoga or stretching or even walking in place would work.

Also, I looked at that UTI clear and I'm not sure it would work for most IC'ers. It has a tad bit of alchohol and quite a few herbs that could be irritating.

All that said though, I'm really glad it did work for you!

:tsk: Does that mean that I probably shouldn't use my "ab-lounger"? Prior to this dx or possible dx and this flare I am having now, I used it faithfully every day to try and flaten my abs. Now I don't know what to do. Right now walking more than a little is very difficult without pain, because I also have vulvodynia.

Agape, I would suggest talking with your doctor --- especially if you mean that gadget that bends you backwards in a reclining position.
