Okay, here goes. I am extremly painfully constipated and I tried everything that I know of to do. It has to be from the lortab and the detrol la is so strong that I am unable to push, I know that they are too strong for me to take but I was having bad spasms, anyways, I am in soooo much pain that I am thinking I might have to go up to the E.R. Does anybody know what they would do for me there? I am very embarrassed about this and I thought someboday may have experiance with this and can help. PLEASE, somebody give me some advice beacause I have never dealt with this before and have no idea what to do. I think I may have pulled some muscles trying to push and am in serious pain. HELP!!!

Milk of Magnesia works well but it takes a few hours. The ER would possible give you the stuff in the green bottle that has a citrus flavor. It is the stuff they give to people doing the prep for a colonoscopy. It is sold over the counter.

There is always the option of an enema.

I really hope you get some relief soon.

Have you tried the Fleet Liquid glycerin? I am in the same position as you. It at least works a little bit which is better than nothing.
Before my flare, my gastroenterologist put me on Erythormycin after trying EVERYTHING and it worked. The only other thing I know to try is Miralax.

Well...I probably did a big NO-NO, last night I took 3 stool softeners and 2 laxitives. Well today I woke up with HORRIBLE cramps that would not go away for hours,(no b.m yet) so I took some anti- diarrhea medicine and now I am clogged up way worst than I was to begin with. So im thinking that was a big mistake. The pain is so bad that I can't take it, and thats even with a lortab. I dont know what to do.

I was going to suggest Miralax.. But that woould be just to keep regular after you go.. Sounds like you need to go now.. So and enama would probably work best, and I would keep straining or you are going to give yourself hemorrhoids..And they are very painful..If the enama does not work, You need to go to the ER..

Is there anything that I can take or do that will work quick?

I think since you took all those meds to get some relief, the only thing left to do is a trip to the ER. I am thinking that your bowels are getting mixed signals. Not fun!!

I hope you can get some relief soon.

The only thing that will work quick is an enama..But I would call your dr first... And like I said if it does not work then you need to go to the ER becuase you could have a blockage.

My grandmother in law who is an RN just came over with some glycerin suppositories and is going to get me an an enema. I am so embarrassed. She wants to give me the enema, oh HELL NO!! Excuse my french, lol. Can I do it myself? What if that won't work? She also said she would examine my rectum too. What!! No thanks. By the way, every time I push my vaginal insides almost come out and my bottom does nothing at all. I just did the suppository, now all that means for me is more stuff stuck inside me. Sorry for the graphic info. What is a blockage? What can be done for that?

I have better luck with the enema's than the suppositories. That me though. The enemas seem to work a lot faster. Don't push anymore. You could have a bowel blockage too. If the enemas and suppositories don't work go to the er. I am unsure of what causes blockages. It make be hard fecal matter but don't quote me on that. My pap had one and the gave him a high powered enema at the hopsital along with some IV laxatives.

If it seems like you have BM in your rectum and it just wont come out then chances are the ER staff will glove up and get it out for you. Sorry for the graphics. I am a nursing student and this stuff just isn't embarrassing. You should not be embarrassed either. Especially here. Most of us suffer with this it seems. I get so scared that I am not going to poop that it stops me from pooping. Mine is mostly psychological since I am not on meds. Talk about embarrassing.

Good luck

if everytime you push your vaginal insides come out and your bottom does nothing? that sounds like prolapse to me (from very personal experience!). i had complete prolapse (vaginal wall, uterus, bladder, rectocele, rectal prolapse) and found it near impossible to have a bm. or if you're just veeery constipated an emema is best. they suck but they can work. i suggest an er trip and a gynocologist trip...esp. if your insides are coming out! good luck...

I just went through something quite similar to this, however I was in a hospital setting. I highly recommend that you make an appointment to see your Dr as soon as you can. If you have to wait, I would suggest a walk-in place that sees urgent care. It may be embarassing, but, if you are not able to go, and you are having the fullness....it could result in another cystocele etc and as you know, you do not want that.
Miralax is good. Mag Citrate is another, but you really do not want to keep putting all this stuff in your system because, well, it may "confuse' it and make it just act like a mule!
Good luck!

Prune juice usually works for me very quickly, but I know it's not IC friendly, but in a pinch..., however, from what you describe it sounds like you need to seek medical help. Don't go too long with any problem on your own!! My friend at work had a blockage, and it can be serious.

Thank-you everyone! I ended up going to the hospital that night and was sent home with the magnesium citrate to drink first thing that morning. I got some relief from the I.V. I think, because I don't drink a lot of water and the few days before that I had been eating a lot of fiber so it must have stopped me up. It was really painful because I have a large uterine fibroid pressing on my colon+ the IC. So the next day I felt alot better. I learned my lesson, DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!! Constipation is no joke!

I'm sooooo glad you are feeling better. I thought I would tell you what I do.
I am taking 500 mg of ms contin and up to 4 350 mg SOMA, also with IC IBS, PFD and TMJ they all put limits on my diet. The meds all stop me up I have been in the same place you were. When I first started on the morphine the pain clinic told me as a prevention , just to counter act what the pain meds do, to take 8 to 12 Senna. A vegetable laxative. I buy the store brand at my kaiser for about $450 for 100 and I usually take 10 every night and there are still times when I will go 4 days to a week without a bm. Senakot is a major brand. They will charge around $20-$25 for the same 100 pills !!
anyway ....................good luck and I hope it just gets better and better

Seriously, I had such dry BM it was like rocks. I was bleeding from it. I tried senokot xtra and it moved mountains, so to speak. I wouldn't use it every day but next time I get backed up from my OAB meds it will be the first thing I reach for.

Katherine, $4.50 or $450? I hope 4.50. I started this thread a few weeks ago, and looking back it almost makes me laugh, although this is a VERY serious subject, hahahahah! I hope it never happens again, sheesh!

I was constipated once before and it was stool of made of concrete. It was torture and I was dry heaving due to the pain. I was given an enema (fleet) from the drug store and I pushed fluids all night. Now, that was due to dehydration, diet change, and traveling. It wasn't caused by medications that stop/slow the GI tract. If it doesn't stop, you really need to go to the ER to get it decompacted. I don't know if this message is getting to you late, but I hope you found a way to feel better!

Thanks for the tip about Senakot. Can you take this regularly? (no pun intended). I'm not 100% blocked up, but am not the way I used to be since IC. I think it's the prelief. I drink a ton of water so I know it's not that. Is it good to reduce cholesterol too? My Mom always used to say "better off out in the big world than in your little tummy"!!! I love my Mom!! :lmao:

I know alot of people can't take the Topamax, but for me it counteracts this issue with the MS Contin so I'm very regular now. Before it, I was extremely impacted.

I am just reading your post and wondered did you get some relief? After my hystorectomy that happened to me. It was 7 days without going. I was in so much pain, I called my gyno and she said get an enema now. So I had to call a friend, because I couldn't drive yet and ask her to get one for me. She bought me two, I used one and within 1 hour it started things and to say the least, after several hours, I felt much better. I keep one on had, because taking all these meds, you never know. Let us know what happened.

I just did a glycerin suppossitory and had I.V. fluids ran through me and mainly I think because they gave me morphine I was able to rest my muscles for a couple of hours. I had been straining all day so that rest helped me be able to relax and go again, finally!! I know, gross, huh? The magnesium citrate helped too. Detrol locks up all my muscles down there so I cant even push pee out! I do not take it anymore. I've been fine ever since!!

I was told what the bowel needs to be regular and passable are the F's:
Fiber
Fat
Fluids
Physical Acitvity (not a true "F", but close enough!).

If meds cause your stool trouble, you need to talk with your prescribing doctor. Constipation and IC do not mix well together!

What your describing definately sounds like a prolapse.
I myself had a uteral, bladder, and rectal prolapse all at once
Especially if you see your insides coming out of your private area.
YOU NEED TO SEE YOUR GYN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!! DON'T DELAY...

Do you take stool softeners on a regular basis? I have a major constipation problem (have already had hemmoroidectomy and fissure surgery because of it). I take 3 maximum strength stool softeners every night and I dring about 8 oz. of prune juice every morning, and wait about 30 min. before I eat. You might one to try one or the other and if you have no success then both. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. This is a very frustrating problem and it definetly puts pressure on your bladder - ugh! Please let me know if you get relief!!!! PS. anything with calcium is a problem for me.

lortab will cause you vicodin. We are not suppose to give medical advice. I am going to give you nursing advice. Man you took that lomotil and that may screw up your bowels for a few days. The two strongest over the counter is a green bottle called magnesium citrate green bottle not sure that is exact name ask the pharmacist for it.......... that will work. Buy two just in case.

Another is duloclax rectal suppostiorty . Try the mag citrate first.

you don't want to go the the ER if you can get rid of it yourself. A Lot of GI md's use that green bottle magnesium citrate to drink before colonoscopy or fleets phosha soda another liquid. Trust me if they use these for coloscopy to clean out people it will work on you. Try this before going to the ER.

If you have to go to ER then go. I am just trying to save you some money on ER trip and not being embarassed. If those two liquids don't work then call your family MD you will know what to do next- call in prescription.

Good Luck

Vicky is very correct. My husband was having bowel issues and that is what his doctor suggested and it worked like a charm since he wasn't having his actual surgery for another week and he was in horrific pain. If you are sensitive to citrus, watch for the ingredients.

I also take a magnesium supplement every day plus drink a small dose of Milk of Magnesia every couple of days to prevent any problems due to meds. I very rarely have that issue anymore. I completely understand the problems that go with traveling, etc. I always take extra in case.

You do have to be very careful and not strain yourself when pushing. Your bowels can strangle and infection or worse can set in.If you know you are having problems please start on something you can take every week , day what ever. I have found that Miralax works great for me if I take it twice a day. Some may only have to take it twice a week. It has no taste and you can even put it in water, pudding what have you. Please find something that will work for you. I have found that eating an apple before your meals will help myadult daughter, she would go up to two weeks without going sometimes. It also helps you lose weight for the apple curbs your appetite.( which she sure did not need to do.)
I usually never answer on this board but this is something we take lightly sometimes. I lost my baby girl at age 8 months from a twisted bowel . The doctor stated that sometimes when you strain things like this can happen . It now scares me with my adult daughter having the worst kind of problems with this and refuses to see a doctor. I had a close friend that was like my daughter and she died of colon cancer last year. Three months after she found out she had it. I do not know if this is related but girls please do not be afraid to ask for help and try your darndest to keep yourself regular. Am sorry if i come off as preaching, I would just hate to see your hurt yourself. My nephew lost half of his colon when he was 3 months old and had a bag. He is doing well now. Once he turned 1 and was up to 20 pounds he was able to get it off. but the little guy does not talk and is so thin. DJ is now three and doing well. We were so blessed.

There was a lady on Oprah that mentioned the same thing Becca. She said that she knew in her mind that there was something wrong and she saw an episode with Dr. Oz and he echoed exactly what she was experiencing and immediately went to the doctor. She had cancer and has now finished her treatment and doing well.

Just to let people know about this because I had never heard of it:

My friend couldn't go for weeks and ended up in the hospital. They gave her everything and nothing worked and no blockage showed up. Well, she ended up have endometriosis which was wrapped around her intestine and was squeezing it shut and strangling it. They had to remove 10 ft. but it did the trick. She still has digestive issues, but at least she can go. She could have died from that if they had waited any longer for surgery.

Hey Humphrey! My friend had the same issue. She ended up having to get 7 feet of intestine removed, her left ovary and a hysterectomy. She was in bad shape... and it took doctors 2 months to finally agree to exploratory surgery. Her bowel wasn't closed off, but she had pencil thin stool. Why they didn't do a barium enema I will never know. But yes, if you have major GI issues talk with your doctor about your meds and the possibility of something else causing your symptoms!
