Hi,

I think what may be happening with you is that your IC is making you feel so bad that you may be attributing that to Atarax, when in fact it may be the typical waxing and waning typical of IC. It's very difficult to be patient waiting for treatment to become effective when you are in so much pain. Also, pain clouds anyone's ability to judge whether or not something is effective.

In the first year I was diagnosed with IC, there were many times when I thought I had turned the corner only to be hit with monstrous pain again and again. Now, that only happens a few times a year.

I'm not trying to give medical advice. However, I've had IC over 20 years and before I became too ill, I was an R.N. in the ER and then OR. My uro is the well known Dr. Parsons.

Dr. Parsons had to talk me into continuing Atarax because it made me so sleepy. It took months for that effect to lessen.

I'm very glad I continued with Atarax and worked up to a dose of 100 mg at bedtime and 25-50 mg. every 4 hours as needed. Since my IC is closely related to allergies, it's imperative that I control them with antihistamines.

I really believe almost everyone can be helped to a point of managing IC. Some trial and error is involved in honing a treatment plan that works for each patient.

Good luck!

Like most meds it takes a couple of months to see the effects of he meds.. What kind of symptoms are you having?

If my normal bad flare is a 7 this is an 11. My urgency is the problem as usual. I never thought of urgency as a pain untill now.

Atarax should not cause this.. Could you have an UTI? Or could of been something you ate.. I just got over one of my worse flares.. And I have not been on Atarax long,But I do not believe it had to do with the atarax..The flare lasted 2 weeks and im over it and feeling really good now.. Hope you feel better soon..

Forgot to add if the Atarax would have caused my flare I think I would still be having problems..

If it is not the medicine then it must be what I ate yesturday. I had to american cheese burders plain from WW Cousins. They were sososos good. I thought I was being good. But it is either the burgers with cheese or the allergy med. Thanks for your help.

I do know that alot of people cannot have cheese.. I am ok with american cheese, but swiss is a nono for me..and most others I cant have either..So the cheese could be it.. You know you could always call your dr to see if you could quit taking the atarax for a few days and se if you get better..Hey anythings worth a try when your flaring.. Oh and remb make sure you drink lots of water...But if its bottled check the label, because bottle water can have alot of additives in it.. I drink just plain spring water..

Hello,

I experienced severe cramping and diarrhea the second night of taking Atarax at a 10mg dose. I have not taken it since. Also it made me soooooo sleepy that I couldn't concentrate at work. I wish I could tolerate it because they are thinking that my IC could be related to allergies. Maybe it takes time for the body to adjust??

Hard to know what's the culprit if you've had a restaurant meal. I've on occasion had trouble with even plain burgers in restaurants. I think it may happen when the meat has been cooked on a surface used for other foods as well, like maybe had had onions on it or an allergen to me. You could keep it going & see if the flare goes away... Or you might get a home UTI test kit (drugstores sometimes have them) & check for a UTI, in case that's it.

If you have to go to work tomorrow, you could call the doctor & stop the Atarax & retry it in a week or two on a weekend if you are feeling really awful. IC patients are known for unusual reactions to meds, so even if it's unlikely, it could be a problem. I always try new meds on the weekend & ultra bland the diet eating only at home to make sure there's no confusion if I flare.

Hope you feel better soon--

I took atarax for a couple months and it made me feel worse. It made me actually have a little incomplete emptying of the bladder, or at least it felt that way, so I stopped taking it. ANY drug you take can make the bladder feel worse. The only thing you could do is lay off the atarax a week and see if you get better or if the pain lessens. Hope you feel better soon.
