One of the great challenges of IC was the lack of a population based study in the USA to determine its true prevalence. In otherwords, rather than surveying patients already at urology clinics, a survey of a random neighborhood better estimates the true prevalence of IC in patients who have, or have not, sought medical care.

One of the first comprehensive studies is called the BACH study... and was done in the Boston area. Their conclusion is that 1-2% of the population has symptoms of IC.
