I have been having problems since the end of 2005... for the past year it hasnt been so bad.. now its really bad.. the only thing I have been taking is amitriptiline and Detrol LA... this has helped until the past few weeks. I was wondering .. if you have irritable bowel.. does it make all of this worse.. I seem to get these flares if I have a bad time with my bowels.. if I am constipated I feel like If I could have a bowel movement I would feel better.. if I have diarrhea.. it seems as though I go into a flare.. and I am in one now.. big time .. I called my doctor and they have called in another pres for cipro.. and thats it for now.. if I dont have an infection and I rarely do when I get tested... why do they give antibiotics.. I usually go on 5-10 days of cipro or microbid.. I do have a weakened immune system .. would that cause this horrible disease? All of this started right after bladder repair.. my surgeon said that he had to put everything back in place it was so bad.. I thought maybe it was the truma from the operation but its been over 18months .. any ideas>??? NO I havent had the cystoscopy and dont want one .. I had one back in the 70's and they didnt give me anything and back then they did something like put a chain on me .. I know that sounds funny but its true.. it was one of the worse things I ever went thru in my life so I am afraid.. thanks for any help

HI Chaty!
I had a Cysto back in the 70's also back then given no pain meds! It was dreadful!!
I have IBS and yep it does make IC much worse.....no matter if it's a diarrhea part of the constipation part! I try to stay neurtral and that's not easy sometimes!
After my first bladder surgery my uro told me that when ever they have to manually move your bladder it's probably going to make conditions worse....and boy did it ever! That's when my IC really kicked in to gear.....it was awful! It seemed that no amount of medication helped one bit.
Has your dr. said why he hasn't started you on Elmiron? It takes months for Elmiron to work so it's wise to get started on it instead of waiting.
Have you tried Freeze dried Aloe Vera? You can buy it thru this site and it really helps. It works like Elmiron in healing the bladder lining but naturally.
I hope you are able to get on a medication regimine that helps you! Take care!

I don't know if I have IBS but I do seem to have some stomach problems, smell food and my bowels get very unhappy and I'm running to the bathroom. I have noticed when my stomach is acting up then my bladder is also giving me problems. It makes sense, everything is so close together.

Everybody has a different opinion of what causes IC. I'm sure that having bladder surgery didn't help. I had to have bladder surgery in 2003 because I had a mass in my bladder. It ended up being endo but they had to take it out and fix my bladder afterwards, that's my theory as to how mine started.

I also wanted to talk to you about an in office cysto. I'm sure that you did have a horrible experience. I went to a horrible uro back in 2003 who did my first bladder surgery. He did an in office cysto on me and pretty much didn't warn me about what he was going to do and didn't do anything to numb me up. It did really hurt so I was really nervous when my current uro said he wanted to do one but they told me that they numb you now. I'm not going to lie, it still wasn't fun but it was no where near as bad as the first one. They put ladocaine gel in my urethra to numb me up for a good 5 minutes before hand and the nurse told me breath out while they were putting the scope in. I did take the rest of the day off from work so I could go home and rest but I was okay the next day. Some uros want to rule anything else out before they decide it's IC. I hope that you get some relief.

This is a thread to a talk plus Q & A that Dr. Moldwin gave. It was VERY eye-opening and interesting for me.

Check out the part about the 'rectal vault' and how it irritates the bladder if it is full. I have the same thing but hydroxyzine, valium and making sure I have a regular bm helps.

Well thank you to those who replied.. I am dreading him doing anything .. I wish it were as easy as taking a pill...I will look for the dried aloevera and try that.. and I will look into what over the counter things I might find.. right now I am going to take my Detrol La and amitriptiline and a boost with a pain pill.. it did help for about 3 hrs.. not completely but it helped.. maybe I can sleep tonight.. thanks again for your help .. have a good night ..

 Thank you so much for sharing this. I found Dr. Moldwin's article to be very informative. Even though I haven't officially been dx, I know I have PFD from the past three surgeries that I've had. Now I'm having tests to see if I also have IC.
