Ok ladies, I'm 26 and have IC and just had surgery on 8/13/07 to have a umbilical hernia repaired, to check for endo, and to have my tubes done!! My Ob has been treating me for the IC for the past 3mths, I take Elmiron and at the begining I went into the OB's office weekly for what they call infusion's of the Elmiron. I also take oxycodone 5mg, now that my Ob has done surgery and I do not have endo and there is nothing that he found by doing a scope he want's to ween me off my pain med's, but my pain is still there and when I saw him last week for a post op appt. he was thinking that since my hernia was repaired and the lesion's in my tubes were repaired my pain would be better. Well it is not it is the same no change at all!! So I go and see him on Friday and I'm guessing that the pain I have is all from the IC, not to mention I have a prolasped bladder which he would not tack up because he does not feel that would cause my pain!! ( only if he had a vagina) My OB has alway's been very understanding about my pain and what I go through everyday!! He has alway's told me he know's I'm in pain and that he does not think I'm a pill seaker, but now that I have had surgery he want's to get me off the pain med's or send me to pain management!! When I go in Friday I almost want him to check out this web site so he can see what all of us go through and that we all are in pain!! Do these doctor's really think that we enjoy not feeling good and we enjoy haveing to take pain pills or some sort of med just to get through that day!!! Ok well I'm feeling a little better, Thanks to all you ladies who took the time to read my post!! God Bless!!!!

I really think that most dr's do not want to handle pain management. They know that we are in pain but they are worried about giving out strong pain meds. That's why a lot of them send people like us to pain management. I would ask him if he can give you enough meds to get through until you can get into to see pain management because he knows your in pain and can't be w/o meds. Good luck!

Honestly it might be to your benefit if you did go to a pain management doctor. There really are good ones out there that are trained specifically in easing pain. I know that sometimes the good ones are hard to find, but once you do the difference is like night and day. My pain doc has been a Godsend to me and while he does have his quirks and strange ways sometimes, he really has helped me with my pain. He believes in IC and in fibro thankfully. Today he got a TENS unit for me and I'm very grateful. There are a lot of ways to manage pain and the best pain clinics/docs have other options along with narcotics like PT, accupuncture, tens units, etc. Ask your doctor if he has a recommendation for a pain doc and if he does, ask him if he will continue to treat your pain until you are able to get an appt with the new doctor. I hope it all works out for you.

I agree with Sandy. Pain doc's have so many tricks up their sleeves. It's not all narcotics. It is industry standard to send patients to pain mgmt these days.
My pain doc also sent me to several specialists to rule other conditions out as well as performing multiple treatments, procedures and meds. Also, they are the ones who move you up to the stronger drugs as your tolerance increases.
My pain just recently went away with surgery (see post in this section). Something the pain doc couldn't do.
Best of luck!
