I take 25mg hydroxizine at night. A couple of nights ago, I accidentally took it twice. The next day I had the best IC day I have had since May. That night I went back to 25 mg and yesterday was as awful as usual. I tried 50 mg again last night after calling my pharmicist to see if it was safe. He said you can take up to 400 mg safely! Today is not as good as two days ago but a definite improvement from usual. I have a call in to my doctor to see what he says.

I was taking 75 to 100 mg at night and it was definately helping my bladder. The only reason I stopped is because I was having major sleep issues and the Atarax made them worse for me.
I'm glad it's helping you.

I have trouble getting up early and feel kind of in a fog with 50 mg. Is this what you were having? Or does it affect you the other way - can't get to sleep?
I am really tempted to try 75mg tonight to see if it is more helpful.
Thanks for you input.

You should probably work up to the 75 mg, but I would wait til your doctor ok's it for several reasons. One being the obvious one that you don't want to put too much in your body too fast, and the other is that if you use up your RX too early you might not be able to get it filled when you run out. Insurance co's don't like to pay for meds early unless you can get your doc to write a new RX with a new dosage on it.
I have problems getting to sleep usually....but sometimes I'll wake up in the middle of the night and not be able to fall back to sleep. Even without taking the Atarax anymore I still have problems but it's not quite as bad. The fog in the morning you're talking about wore off for me after about a week or two of being on it.
See what your doctor says before you up your dose, just to be safe.

i started taking 50 mg of atarax a day (25 in the morning, and 25 at night) in the spring when i was having allergies and flaring. I found it to be really helpful with both my allergies and bladder. my body has gotten used to it, so i don't have the drowsiness any more. i found that to last only for about a week.

I have been taking all 50 at night. Never thought of spliting it. Actually though he has given me the 50mg pills now. I like the idea of spliting because I feel like I always get worse at night. Thanks

I too am really helped by Atarax. I take a pretty high dose that took about 2 years to work up to, with my uro's input, of course. But, one of the things I like about my uro is, if I want to try something, and it's reasonable, he always usually lets me. My Atarax dose is 100 mg at bedtime, and if I wake up in the middle of the night, I have another one laid out waiting. If I'm really flaring, I take 50mg. with a pain pill (which I hardly ever take anymore). If just my allergies are bothering me, I take 25 mg. every 4 hours. This is obviously, the way it's prescribed for me. Ultimately, you and your uro have to make that decision. It's a great Rx drug cause the generic is really cheap. My insurance will give me 480 at a time. Lasts awhile that way. Jan

When I first started the Hydroxyzine (generic for Atarax) I was only taking 25mg at night. It wasn't helping at all, so after a few months I was upped to 50mg at night. This seems to help me pretty well. Both doses took me about 2 weeks to get used to, because it was so hard to wake up and then I would be drowsy all day. But, I've been on the 50mg for a few years now, so it doesn't really affect me that way anymore. I honestly belive the Hydroxyzine helps me more than anything else. I would definately get in touch with your Dr about increasing your dosage.
Good luck!
If increasing your dosage helps, then if you are patient then the side effect may go away within weeks to a few months. It is hard to patient when the meds make us tired and groggy, but it may be worth the wait.
Sometimes, making the dosage increases in extremely small increments can help, so perhaps you can find out what mg the meds come in. Go to rxlist.com Having your doctor on board and included in the plan before making adjustments always helps to gain more cooperation from them.
