I have recently found out I have IC and trying to learn and cope with it. My mane symptom is really bad urgency. I do not have much pain if any. If I had sex during a "flare" would that make it worse or be bad to do?

Just in my experience, and I do experience pain as well as frequency and urgency, it is best for me to avoid intercourse when I am flaring...mainly because of the pain during and even more pain afterwards. But if I had only urgency, I wouldn't be quite as worried, although it is so individual in how intercourse affects us. I have found that Pyridium, sold OTC as uristat or AZO standard, helps me with frequency or urgency, and I almost always take one before sex, best if I take it half hour before. That might help you with your symptoms. And if you aren't on any Rxd meds, Elavil 10 mg helps me tremendously with F & U. IF you haven't tried it, ask your dr about it. It's a common IC med that helps many of us with F & U, and some with pain. Best wishes :)

I never have sex during a flare....for one thing it would be very uncomfortable. I do take Azo before having sex though......cause I know that afterwards I'm going to have some pain and frequency. It's the pits.....but just part of good ol' IC!

Lately I almost feel like I'm in one huge flare. If I'm not having a lot of pain I'll still have sex. I usually take an AZO before hand like Briza said and then if I'm in pain I'll take a pain pill afterwards and use my heating pad. If I didn't have sex because I was having symptoms then we would never have sex and I know that would not make my hubby happy so I just gauge how bad my symptoms are. That's just me though, I think most people don't have sex if they are flaring.
