does Atarax take time to work?

Do I have to use Atarax for a long time to get the benefits of it? I used it for a few nights but it didn't do anything for me. Now I'm wondering wether I should've continued taking it for a longer time.

I took Atarax, or Hydroxyzine, for 3 months...I didn't see much of a difference except that I slept very well combined with Elavil.

Your dosage may not be correct for it to work, it may take longer for for the affects. I started out at 25 mg a night, and have worked my way up to 75. If I run out and can't get it filled, with in a week, my bladder is really furious with me. If you only have taken it for a few nights it may not have been able to build up in your system for it to work. Like Elmiron it takes time. Elmiron can take 6 to 8 months to get the full affects.

I have terrible allergies, and I have been put on so many meds over the years. They always say it takes 2-3 weeks for the med to work effectively (but I could feel improvement before). So, since the Atarax is for mast cell degranulation/histamine release, it might take the same amout of time as other allergy meds to help nasal allergies. If I were you, I would give it a week or two, then ask your doctor about upping the dose. I noticed I slept better after a week or two and Atarax is the only reason I don't get up 5+ times at night (and I usually only get 7 hours of sleep on average).
