I've just been diagnosed with IC, and have been reading up on the diet. I'm also diabetic, and the two diets are really in conflict. Is there anyone out there with advice or who has been dealing with these two illnesses for a while?

Hi bjgreen! I can empathize with you. I was diagnosed w ic officially last Jan and newly diagnosed w impaired glucose tolerance. Not quite as bad as full blown diabetes but my dr said it could someday lead to it. In the past few months I have gained 30 lbs with no real change in excersise or diet. So my dr. did a c-peptide blood test and it was elevated and he said the glucose is storing in my cells and unable to be released and that's why I'm getting so fat! I think I'm explaing it right. All I know is that I take metformin(glucophage) half a tablet twice a day and Increase excersise and eat 6 small meals a day and check blood sugar 4 x a day. It is real hard for me to find any time of the day to take my Elmiron on an empty stomach! I really never did see a difference in the ic diet vs my reg diet because the pain was the same no matter if i ate right or not. It always burned my bladder like acid in open sores! My dr started me on vicodin when it all began but it took me from a pain level of 12 to a 7 in which he said that is still not going to give you quality of life so he put me on oxycodone 20mg extended release. I was very hesitant about it but desperate to relieve the pain. 1) It does not make me feel loopy or tired 2) it takes the pain away w one tablet in the morning which in turn takes the frequency from peeing every 15 min to hours now! Now I can concentrate on excersising since I have been in bed for months. This new pain med helps me because it slowly releases into the bloodstream for my entire day. But yeah I understand the confusion and what a puzzle to factor in sticking with an ic diet, diabetic diet, excercise when you feel rotten, eating several small meals a day to control your diabetes, having to take your elmiron on an empty stomach and just remembering what to do when :loco: Be strong kiddo, don't know why I'm on this journey but I keep looking to Jesus  Sandy
