I have been on Macrobid for a possible UTI for 5 days. Today I took my last Macrobid at 8 am. I developed a horrid toothache and had to call my dentist today. He prescribed Pennicilin for the toothache, but advised me to wait until tomorrow morning to take it because I took the Macrobid this morning. He said it could cause a yeast infection. When I asked my pharmacist if I could take the Pennicillin today after taking the Macrobid in the morning, he said there is no problem at all. Who should I listen to? My husband says listen to the dentist, but I really want my toothache to go away. Meanwhile the dentist gave me Vicodin. Any suggestions?

Hmmm,

I'd tend on the side of listening to the Dentist since he's going to be the one treating your tooth and it's ache. Maybe you can take the Vicoden to tide you over until you can wake up in the morning and take that Penicillin. You may want to watch out for signs of yeast and discuss this with the Dentist as well and have a plan for treating it if it arises.

Best Wishes and I'm sorry your tooth is in so much pain.

I am concerened with your dentist calling in an rx with out you seeing him. How dose he know that there is an infection without seeing you.

regarding the the 2 rx's, the pharmacist is more qualified to make that determination.

Thanks Kara--that is sound advice...I think I will follow it since two of you are saying the same thing. I appreciate your prompt reply. Take care.

If it were me, I would follow the pharmacist's advice. They are more knowledgeable about medications in general and drug intreactions--that is what they are trained for. I have had a similar problem in the past where two medications were rx'd and would intereact somehow and had to learn about it from the pharmacist.
