Since the hospital I was making the baby hat/booties for never liked them I did some research on the interent. There are many hospitals in other states that need baby hats/booties and even blankets. There are some that also need burrial gowns for them. I never even thought about that but found one web site that lists the hospital that needs them. One I found so far is in Las Vegas. I'm not sure if I can post the address/phone number but if you are interested you can message me or google burrial baby gowns. They also want hats/booties for the babies that will be taken home. Thought I would share this if someone else would like to make donations of baby items.

HI Mary!
Thanks for posting that! I may have to drag out my crochet hook and try my hand at baby blankets again. I made several 25 yrs ago....but haven't made any since. I'd like to find a hospital with low income families......those who really need a new baby blanket! What dimensions would a baby blanket be..hight and width? Thanks! Roxie

The hospital I worked at would have loved the hats and never would have been so crazy picky about them. I still don't get why they gave you such a hard time with them.

As for the burial gowns, it's MUCH nicer when you can take a stillborn, or dead infant to the parents in a nice gown rather than the standard hospital t-shirt. We used to put diapers on them so they had a sembelance of normalcy to them and wouldn't cause more pain to the parents.

I think the gown idea is a great one!!! It was the hardest part of my entire career---prepping a dead baby to take to his/her parents....some people take pictures at this time and a pretty gown would be so much more meaningful.

If I could thread a needle I'd certainly try to make some, but I honestly have trouble sewing on a button.

I also know that indigent patients are in need of donations like car seats, formula, pacifiers, diapers, shirts, booties, and blankets. We used to have a stash for those ladies that were really short on money so that they had some things to get the through the first week or so at home.

This thread makes me miss my job all the more.

One thing you can do is to contact the Volunteer Department in your local hospital and ask.

my mom knits all the time. we have also donated blankets to chemo labs since the patients get cold during chemo, they take them home and become very attached to blankets. at least my sister did.

Here is a web site that has a list of hospital and organizations. Hope it is ok to list it.

I never measured a baby blanket. I Just follow the pattern. Some of the places on the web site have their own patterns to follow. I have lots of baby set patterns to use.
Think the hardest job in the world is to be a doctor and nurse. Exspecially the nurses since they have to take care of the babies and people all the time. I don't know how they handle it when a baby dies.

It was very hard. Every time I'd leave the room so that the parent's could have some privacy I went to the breakroom and cried. Sometimes I cried with the family if I'd gotten to know them. I really felt like I made a difference back then....I'm glad you wrote this thread, it makes me want to call and see what the hospitals in my area need in the way of donations. At least I can still do something to help others.

Thanks for spreading the word Mary.

Did you ever get to see any of the babies after they grew up? The one gyno I went to had a wall full of pictures of the babies he delivered. Your job was one of great joy and sadness. It takes special people to work with the baby unit. A great group of mommies.

This just gave me a great idea for what I can do while I'm recouping after bladder surgery. I'll have plenty of time and I love to knit and crochet. It's such a good cause and you know they are useful - not just for show. Thanks for the thread - pun not intended.

Mary,
Maybe since you hospital is so particular; you could call some local shops or even a corporate manufacturer of baby goods and request a donation of caps/booties/gowns.

The Neonatal ICU I worked at had reunions every year. It was a lot of fun to see those sick little premies as healthy toddlers and kids!
