View Full Version : I need help! New/different symptoms after yeast remedy

I really need some help! I'll try to be brief :-) I started having symptoms a few years ago during pregnancy, it got markedly worse last year (PAIN, urgency and frequency) and I participated in the Elavil/amitryptaline study last summer with no relief. It was a terrible summer. I was clearly on the placebo though, because when I started real Elavil last October I got much better. After about three months, and going up to 75 mg per day, I was feeling terrific. I did have small flares here and there, but could usually trace them back to food/drink. I felt like I could really measure my success by the fact that I had taken only one or two pyridium all year.

Then I got a sinus infection, which eventually required antibiotics. The antibiotics gave me a yeast infection, so I bought some of that three-day yeast remedy (where you insert the cream with an applicator). As soon as I used it the first day I knew it was a huge mistake. I think Kadi described the feeling as sitting on a hill of fire ants. I got through that night, trying to be very careful not to let that stuff anywhere near my urethra, and I actually felt okay the next day (which was good as I had to throw a birthday party for my 4-year old). I thought I had dodged the bullet.

The next day my bladder pain was back in full force, I could barely move without wanting to cry (or scream). I pulled out the pyridium and the heating pad and the pain went away. The next couple of days and nights I was hit with the worst frequency ever. I would literally get up and go to the bathroom, lie back down and then need to get up and go again -- and this was while taking 75 mg of Elavil at bedtime! I really understood how bad that frequency feeling could be, and I thought I had understood it before. I was a zombie and it was awful. Then after a few days that tapered off, but I've been left for the last several days with horrible pain during and after urination. I feel lots of spasms and just horrible pain -- not really burning, just awful cramping pain in my bladder and urethra. I dread going to the bathroom, but feel pretty normal at other times (and luckily I don't have to go super often). I have a hard time not crying out in pain every time I go.

So... that's my story. Any ideas? I don't think I have a UTI, since I did have pain upon urination before, but the pyridium used to help more (I tend to get used to it really fast and when it stops making me nauseous it usually stops working, too). I hope I haven't completely ruined my bladder... I hope someone has some ideas for me. Thanks in advance!!

You should really get tested for a UTI just to rule that out. But the pain you are decribing where is at?

Sorry you're having a rough time. Yeast infections, themselves, can cause us to flare. I would call your doctor and make sure you yeast is gone. They can give you dulfican (oral pill) for the yeast vs. the over the counter stuff (which, by the way, can also flare us). Hopefully, your flare will calm down soon.

You should definitely go in to see the doctor to rule out UTI, like Ronda suggested.

You might also, til things calm down, try rinsing during urination with a bottle of cool water (spray bottle works well).
Wondering if an ice pack might help too.

Everybody is different with this stuff. Diflucan flares me horribly, but I'm okay with the Longs brand of 7 day Monistat. The one day ovule one is the one where I felt like I'd sat on an anthill, external & internal burning from front to back - yow! The three day one was better, but still burned. I guess for me anyhow, it's better to use the milder one over more days.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

Thanks for your replies. The pain I'm feeling is in my bladder mostly (some urethra pain) and it's not burning, just severe cramp-like pain. That's the best I can describe it, anyway. Thanks again for your thoughts, I'm glad to have somewhere to go to ask questions!

I am so sorry with what you are going through. I have a question and I hope anyone will put an input for my sanity sake. For the last week I have been burning while urinating I mean its like I am urinating acid its like my skin is about to fall out down there and after voiding also my urethra hurts and my bladder hurts too. what sucks is I can only take tylenol because i am five weeks pregnant and three weeks away from obgyn and uro appointment.Anybody please give me some ideas on any home remedy I am on fire down there help me help me please a response would mean so much

The tylenol may not be your friend when it comes to burning. I was feeling better then took tylenol for something else and got a lot of burning. Usually I'm okay with tylenol (ibuprofen really flares me), but perhaps due to this flare my bladder was extra sensitive. Some ICers can't ever use tylenol, so it's something to think about.

The thing that helps me most for burning is a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water, it tastes yucky but really relieves the burning. HOWEVER, I don't know if baking soda could cause any problems during pregnancy -- I can think of reasons that it might (too much sodium, gastric effects, etc.) but I'm definitely not an expert! Absolutely check with your ob/gyn before trying anything, even a "home remedy" like baking soda. Some people take TUMS instead of using the baking soda, again check with your doc to see if that's okay. Also, hot baths with some baking soda or epsom salt in the water help, but I know hot baths aren't recommended when you're pregnant. You might want to post your question on the pregnancy board to get some ideas about what is safe.

Sorry I'm not much help, but it might give you some ideas you can go to your doctor with.

btw, I am feeling MUCH better. Thanks to everyone for their support and suggestions. I'm still having some burning and spasming after urination, but otherwise I'm doing quite well. The flare is not over, but it's on its way out the door, hurray!
