View Full Version : Not sure how to take this...

I went to my Gastro for a follow-up on my meds.
I told him, dispite the high dose of Zegerid (for reflux) I still get nauseous. Not reflux nauseous but just like nauseous. He sort of looked at me like "that makes no sence". He thumbed through my file and double checked that my gallbladder was taken out (he was the doctor who told me it needed to be taken out) and went over what tests/procedures he had done already. It's not like I want to be poked and prodded. I asked if I could just be a naseous person and he countered with some lame crack that my hot pink nailpolish was making HIM nauseous (I went for the most obnoxious color my friend had--apparently I succeded).
Anyway it seemed like he thought that...well, I'm not sure. But I got that "it's in you head" feeling. Or the "are you just making this up". Though he didn't say it outright.
I was his last appointment, so it could have been him rushing to leave. But he has never really done that nor has he ever said or insinuated that I was making something up.
So I am not sure how to take that last appointment. He didn't want to do anything (which is fine with me). Left my meds as is and said come back on an as needed basis (not regular followups). I sort of feel like he is saying ... nothing I guess.
I just feel like he thinks that I am making up symptoms (which I am NOT). But I don't know if that's what he REALLY was thinking (I didn't ask).
Am I overreacting? (the answer is probably "yes")
I'm just so afraid that nobody believes me anymore.

Does your tachycardia act up when you take this reflux drug? A racing heart can make you nauseous.
Just grasping at straws not knowing your complete history with this doctor, but I do know they are almost always quick to dismiss stuff they've never "heard" of before.

Nausea is caused by so many things - at least it is for me. Headaches, IC pain, upset tummy, stress...... I do not for a minute think that it is in your head. I think that sometimes doctors overlook what to them is not a big deal. I felt really nauseous yesteday morning from not feeling well and so I took a few minutes and took a few deep breaths to tell myself I was okay. Also, peppermint tea can help with the nausea and if you are not diet sensitive sour cream does too believe it or not. If I am really nauseous I will get a plain baked potato and put a little butter for flavor and sour cream.
Is nausea a side effect of your meds - maybe it will go away with time if you have just started taking it recently.
Hope you feel better soon.

You know doctors can really make us all nausea...lol
Please dont think this is in your head.. You know your body and you know when you are hurting or feeling bad or just plain nausea..If you have problems with reflux has he ever said you could have stomach ulcers?.. I use to have them and everytime I would eat I would get a nausea feeling..
But also like April said it could be the meds you are taking..Well dont let your doctor get you down.. I hope you start feeling better soon..:smile tee

Ya know, until now, I didn't even think about that. I know that stress, nerves, meds, and especially excersize agrivate my tachicardia (that doesn't mean I avoid it though:rolleyes: ). And most
of the time my heart beats faster I get nauseous. I NEVER thought of that. The only meds I am on are Zegerid for reflux and Necon 1/50 - 28 (birthcontrol). The Zegerid doesn't seem to make me nauseous. But the BC probably could--I was just switched. I know when I take Tramadol, it makes my heart beat go to about 155ish and I start to vomit.
I panicked like I did because that particular doctor has NEVER been any sort of dismissive before.

I had an endoscopy a few months back to see if I had an ulcer or not. He (the doctor) said there was a lot of inflamation in my stomch and my vocal chords were inflamed and red (as a result of reflux I suppose). He gave me Carafate to prevent an ulcer but I had to stop taking it one week into the regimin because between that and the Elmiron I couldn't eat (had to time it according to meals). It also affected the absorption of my Ditropan XL so some frequency came back. I notice when I food related nausea it's after a meal (doesn't quite matter what I eat).
I think if it doesn't go away in a month or so, I'm going to go back and explain to him how I felt last time (the feeling as if he was shrugging me off). And see if there is something I can do to help make what ever is going on w/ my stomach better.

I totally understand that feeling, of being afraid the doctor is dismissing you. It took me nine years to get my IC diagnosis; I was told so many times that I was not in pain, the pain was in my head, I was a drug seeker... I think I'm permanently scarred. I never want to see a new doctor, for fear of that same old, same old. I had to see a cardiologist this week, and my heart rate was around 120 by the time he came in, just because I was so afraid he wouldn't take me seriously. They call it "White Coat Syndrome (WCS)." I call it "Nine-years-of-dealing-with-morons-who-couldn't-admit-they-didn't-know-everything Syndrome (NYODWMWCATDKES)."
So, I sympathize with how you're feeling about this doctor, but I think if you've had a good relationship with him so far, you really should try having it out with him. Tell him how you felt, get it out in the open. Just stay calm while you do it.
I'm sorry you're feeling nauseous. It's the pits. Sometimes just plain old pain makes me nauseous. I hope it improves before you see the doctor again, but I think you should talk to him about the whole issue anyway.

Well, I called his office today (because my pharmacy botched my perscription) and wound up speaking with him (the doctor). I asked if he though the nausea was all in my head and he said "no! where would you get something like that?" So I guess I did over react because I thought he wouldn't believe me.
I asked him why he made those stupid (but ocassionaly funny) jokes or comments that seemed...off topic, and he said he was trying to get me to relax (and that being tense all the time can make a person nauseous and then some) because I gave off this "I'm tense don't come near me" vibe (which I am aware that I give off when I get very nervous or around doctors). He also asked if his jokes were THAT lame. My answer was "YES!". I should mention, I'm the one of like 3 patients of his under 40 and teens are a tough audience.
Anyway, just thought I would catch everyone up and let you all know that I'm just a little over-sensative to things like that (it's sort of like when a parent tells their teenager they look nice, and the kid shouts "did you just call me fat?!"--or something to that effect).
