Hey Kara,
Is that the one by Dr. Goopman?
I skimmed through it but I will go back and read it. The few parts I read were really compelling.
Hope you are feeling better......give your mom a hug :grouphug: for me and tell her we are all praying for her

Laura,

Yes its called "How Doctors Think" by Jerome Groopman, M.D.

I only wish he was around for us IC patients.

I've just started it, and it's really interesting. Nice, clear writing, also -- nothing to0 scientifically challenging for us "laypeople," but at the same time it is a serious book. I'd like to see them make it required reading for all medical students. As Kara said, it's a must-read for us, because if we can figure out how they're thinking, we can probably communicate with them much more easily. BTW, it's reviewed in the Sunday NY Times this week. Michael Chrichton wrote the review; he liked it too.

I just called borders and asked them to hold a copy of this book. It seems like it will be interesting. I will start it tonight. I love to read. My hubby gets nervous when we go to borders because I can walk out of there broke easily if I wanted to :).

When I was an undergraduate in Boston at MIT, we had the whole month of January off for a period called "IAP" or "Independent Activities Period." We were allowed access to a lot of things -- and one year, I decided to take some courses at Harvard Medical School.

One class, called "The Genetic and Molecular Basis of Some Common Diseases" was taught by Jerry Groopman, and he was an AWESOME guy. He is brilliant as well as compassionate, and I would encourage you all to read this book. Back then he was advocating for doctors to LISTEN to patients, and we often had patients as guest speakers in the course... they would come in and tell their stories, and unless we had to ask a question to clarify a symptom, we were not allowed to interrupt the patient or jump in with a diagnosis; in fact, if you did that, your grade suffered.

Jerry Groopman is awesome :D

I'm thinking of writing a book report on it. Not all of us like to read. I am right in the middle of it. I love it so far. It will be able to help us communicate with our doctors in a way that gets OUR needs met. I would love to meet Dr. Groopman. It seems as though he would be sympathetic to us. The book opens with a Celiac Case which is something I also suffer from. I was diagnosed last year after my Mom. It sucks but at least the word it out on that disease.
