Man relieves himself in air-sickness bag

AP - March 17, 2007

SALT LAKE CITY -- SkyWest Airlines apologized to a passenger who said he wasn't allowed to use the restroom during a one-hour flight and ended up urinating in an air-sickness bag.

James Whipple said he had two "really big beers" at the Boise, Idaho airport. While on a flight to Salt Lake City on March 7 he wanted to use the cabin restroom.

The captain had declared it off-limits during the short flight because a light wasn't working.

Whipple said he had used the cabin restroom before the plane departed but had to go again and finally reached for the air-sickness bag.

"It was like I had no choice," Whipple told The Salt Lake Tribune, which posted the story on its Web site Friday.

No other passengers noticed Whipple using the bag, but a flight attendant asked him about it and told the captain, who called airport police.

Whipple was questioned and took a taxi home to Sandy, a Salt Lake City suburb.

The airline sent him a letter of apology and a flight voucher, SkyWest spokeswoman Sabrena Suite-Mangum said Friday.

She said SkyWest decided to go ahead with the flight and get the light fixed in Salt Lake City, rather than delaying it or canceling it for repairs.

"For such a short flight, we really felt we were trying to inconvenience the least number of passengers possible by operating that flight," Suite-Mangum said

Gotta love this if only because now skywest will be extra diligent in supporting people who NEED restroom access!! I've flown them before and it was a great flight.

Now if we could just get the rest of the airlines to sit up and take note! :) That's great!

Yes, that is super great. One step at a time and maybe they will all join in.

Sending hugs, Trishann

You know, I'm glad he had the option to pee in the bag...(nothing like a garden hose to help out in those situations) But what would most of us done?? (well, I wouldn't have slugged down a couple of beers first) But I always drink ALOT of water so I would have been a sorry bambina. I would've pulled out the card but I don't know if would worked. (You sometimes get the look like "I don't get it...you have to pee?" or my favorite is "why don't you wear adult diapers?" That ONE really frosts my ass. Like they would like that...In addition, I can't pee in my pants to save my life.

Do you think a higher percentage of people feel the need to

A. Go to the bathroom within 30 minutes after boarding a plane.

B. Barf

Enough said.

Note: They feel a great need to provide everyone with air sickness bags (I've flown almost EVERYWHERE and I've never seen or heard anyone use one), yet they have on average, 100 passengers aboard even short flights and only a few restrooms?

More said.

Amazing. An apology & voucher is issued to a guy dumb enough to drink two beers before a flight & enebriated enough to wiz in public...

And I've had to beg & argue on numerous occasions to get the aisle seat I already arranged when I bought the ticket, even explaining IC as a disability & showing the IC card...

The hassles I've had with restrooms on planes since I got IC have made me somewhat unenthusiastic about air travel.
