For my fellow pet lovers, you probably heard about the massive pet food recall announced yesterday by Menufoods that eaffects more than 50 different brand names throughout the USA & Canada. The concern ais focused on the "gravy" based wet foods, in foil packets and cans. A significant number of dogs and cats have been killed and/or suffered kidney failure after eating the product due, possibly, to a contaminated source of wheat gluten.
Two companies have provided a seperate recall... the Eukanuba and Iams brands of wet foods. These are very large, famous and credible companies that are very popular in the USA. In addition, all of the wet foods for the companies listed below should be returned to your store for a full refund
Here's a complete list of the manufacturers effected:

Thank you for posting this! My husband had a couple cans of "Your Pet" dog food around -- he went to get his money back. As for our cat, his food's okay according to this list. I'm so glad you posted it so we could check!

I get Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul and I don't know if it's made by any of the companies listed, but not shown on the bag or something. Does anyone know if it's listed or if they sub out their work or anything?

Thank you Jill, my daughter has a sick dog and we thought maybe this was why but it is not the brand she feeds the dog. But you just don't know anymore about these things.
Thanks again, Trishann

Hey,
I'm pretty sure Chicken soup is ok. Thats manufactured by Diamond pet food which is not (as far as I know) part of Proctor and Gamble. From what I gather in the article in my paper, Menu Foods is the company that is having the recall. They're the petfood component of proctor and Gamble, and they make IAMS brand and Eukanuba in addition to the others listed in Jills post.
Other brands, like Diamond pet food and Purina (which is part of Nestle) are fine.

Our doggie gets dry food and our brand isn't on the list so I think we're okay.
Thanks, Jill

Thanks for the thorough lists...looks like my babies are safe.
Had a few guilty feelings:rolleyes: , though, when they announced the Peter Pan recall...found a jar of the recalled stuff in my pantry: I NEVER eat peanut butter, but that jar was leftover from when the EX was still living here  no wonder he was always sick...

I brought back the Iams to PetSmart today. No problem, they refunded my money. I think I have some Science Diet too that I have to bring back.
Signs of renal failure are increased thirst, increased urination, vomiting or loss of appetite. If you think your pet has any problems call or bring them to the vet as soon as possible. Renal failure is reversible. Kathi

Thank you for posting this!!! I was so relieved to see that my pets' food was not on the full list; I had heard about the recall on the news, but many news programs did not provide a list of all the brands. Anyways, I really appreciate it!!!

This is really upsetting me now, because Duchess died of rat poison the week that food was recalled.... and we didn't know where she got it from
Oh no... When I saw your post I remembered your dog died recently. :( Was Duchess eating any of the brand names recalled - wet dog foods???

My heart goes out to all of the folks who lost there loved pets, especially from tainted pet food. It's sooooo sad.

Duchess was eating "Wellness" pet food and "Dogswell" treats.... I don't see those names on the list but I'm still VERY suspicious of it, because it just seems too coincidental that the week she died of rat poisoning was also the week that all that food was recalled.
Is it up to the pet food company to admit their food is tainted and needs to be recalled, or is there a national pet food regulation company that recalls it?

I'm not certain how this all came about, but the dog food company spokesperson says they are now testing all of the ingredients. Sometimes I have felt that we should give our Meggie canned food, but I'm very glad we decided not to.

One name that they added to the list (according to my vet) was Mighty Dog foil packs (not the cans).
Had to take my puppy because she refused to eat for a few days, wouldn't walk, and had some nasty diareah. She was fed several brands from the list. They did blood work, stool and urine samples, and took her temp (she REALLY hated that). She had a high fever but her kidneys/liver were fine. Turns out she had Lyme disease. We have since been giving her chicken, rice and baby food (people food) and her 3 week course of Doxicyclin for the Lyme infection.

My cat was eating Chicken Cuts in Gravy by Hills Science Diet. He is 20 years old, and I freaked when I saw the recall of Hill's Science Diet because they recalled this food after the original recall, and I already purchased a few more cans thinking this food was okay. I check the lot no. on the can and it didn't match the recalled lots on the website. I was freaking out because my cat also has been vomitting, but he can do that once in a while because he is extremely old. As a precaution I threw every Iams food, wet or dry out, and threw out the cuts and gravy Science Diet. So far he looks okay, but I'm still really leary of buying wet food, but my cat Tigger has to have it because he is so old, and gets dehydrated, and doesn't eat enough dry. This thing has really made a lot of people anxious. I hope they find out the source of the rat poison.
I'm sorry Sacausa about your pet Duchess.

Have any of you ever read the filler list on a can of commercial pet food? I have seen chicken bills, feathers, ground carpet, bark, sawdust, hooves and any number of gross things. Which is exactly why we never, ever fed our little Ginger any commercial pet food. She ate canned people food plus vegetables and brown rice. One day turkey, then chicken, then sardines, then organic hamburger, sometimes if we had grilled fish she would eat that.
She also loved popcorn with butter on it, and ice cream, her two favorite junk foods. She lived to be 19 years old, had all her own teeth, strong heart, strong kidneys, some arthritis in her back. One day she just had a stroke and died. She was a Lhapso Aphso and the sweetest dog I ever owned, I still mourn her.

My sister and I took hers back on Friday afternoon to Walmart-- didn't have a receipt so we got a gift card. It helped her a lot as she had to buy food for her grandkids -- I bought dry dog food for her dogs. Its a shame-- first peanut butter (she (my sister got sick from that) and now dog food--luckily, her dog didn't get sick from that!!) Rat poison! read that in the paper yesterday afternoon. My heart goes out to the people here and all over who lost their "babies" .

Only one specific brand of Hills Science Diet was recalled. It was the prescription diet called M/D. This food was made with the contaminated wheat gluten. Please go to Hills.com for more information on the recalled foods for this company.

What boggles my mind is that anyone would buy ANY food products from China. With more than half of their rivers completely poisoned and the air pollution levels so high that tourists report seeing crops covered with grey or white powder, why ... oh why... would we buy any foods from China.
I just had some good friends return from a trip to the Chinese mainland. They both became horribly ill, described appalling levels of pollution, etc. What amazed me the most, however, was that they discovered that the sewage lines in hotels are not required to be vented outside of the hotel. thus, any build up of methane gas etc. goes right back into the hotel rooms up the toilet and shower drains. They had to open the windows wide to sleep safely despite cold weather.
Sooo... with so many American & Canadian farmers struggling to survive, shouldn't we be buying from them instead??? Even if it costs more, the safety of our families, our pets and our long term futures are worth any price. I mean, sheeshhh!!!

It makes me angry that someone is perfectly willing to endanger the lives of our much loved pets in the quest for the almighty dollar! We will continue to purchase "home grown" dog food from a natural foods store for our Meggie.
We were having a family discussion about this and decided that there are some people who deserve to go broke --- and the pending law suits just might at least make some dents in a few wallets!

Every aspect of how this came about just makes my blood boil. I think there should be some kind of testing at our points of entry for these types of things - foodstuffs that are being used in the manufacture of anything to be consumed by Pet and Owner alike. Isn't there already something like that in place??? If so will it make them tougher in testing etc.?? I was appalled when I read that it's cheaper to import the wheat gluten than it was to get it domestically - no wonder our farmers etc are struggling.... Sometimes there are more important things than money, have they no concept of the trickle down theory? The more we utilize our own, the better they do, the more money they have to spend etc etc etc....ugh.
