HI My exhusband and son alway suffered from canker sores. It's a miserable thing to have. Only 2% of those who get canker sores get the kind that bleed and leave scars in the mouth (like they had) The dr. said they are caused by a virus. He suggested more vitamin C (tho citric acid isn't good if you are prone to canker sores) and don't eat spicy foods or tomato products. There's several products on the market now to help with the pain and supposedly shorten the time you have them. Roxie

I did not have a canker sore but did have one of those little ulcers that you get when you bite your cheek and I used Rinseacol, Gly-Oxide, and Campho-Phenique. It really did help to get it cleared up. Good Luck!!

Oh! I use Gly-Oxide as well! When I was about 3-4 I had a whole mouth full of them, ugh. That's what the doc recommended back then, and I still use it. I also found a great product called OraBase, it's by Colgate. A few years ago I had one so bad, that I could only eat soup - too much chewing was to hard on it because my teeth just kept it from healing. This stuff forms a "coating" over the sore, so you can eat etc and it helps it heal. It was fabulous!!! (Zilactin is great too, I had bought both, lol)

I just got Zilactin... It's numbing my whole mouth ha ha it's hard to talk. Which is not good b/c I have to answer phones and make appts. My lip feels like its HUGE!!!!! Thanks for the advice..
Oh I forgot someone told me to take L-Lysine, will that affect my bladder??

My daughter gets them all the time. It started when she first got braces, 4 years later she still gets them and it not only 1 its 2 or 3. I feel bad for her she 17.

What can help sometimes is to reduce the pH of your mouth -- so, before you put your Gly-Oxide on after eating, rinse your mouth with Maalox. Yep. I know it is gross, but swish it around like mouthwash, spit it out, let it sit for a minute, and then apply whatever protective coating you have bought.
Also avoid spicy or acidic foods, but you should be doing that anyway for the IC diet ;)

Oh Jen! I had heard the same thing, totally forgot it til you mentioned it! Thanks for the reminder, hopefully I won't forget again, as it seems I somehow always end up biting the inside of my mouth and wham, there you go it becomes a full-blown canker, grrrrr.

Also try orabase or a pickiling spice called alum. It burns like crazy at first, then makes it feel alot better. It heals them up in a couple of days...plus it cheap. These would be options after you had the sores. Not for preventing.
