View Full Version : An Interesting InterStim Question

Okay, I want to first state that my hubby and I are both ex-cops, and that is why this question came to our minds recently.

We were wondering....what would happen to a person with InterStim that got tased? Not that I intend on ever doing anything to warrant being tased, but it was quite an interesting thought considering the amount of juice those things send through you. I am definitely going to ask my medtronics rep on Friday or have hubby ask him if I'm too doped up to remember.

Any thoughts?

Hi Claudia :

That is a good question and I am not sure on the answer as I have not had this done to me and don't think I would want it done either:tsk:

I am sure it would really screw up your setting on the InterStim for sure ..

when you feel up to it please let us know the response, I also have the interstim. As you I do not plan on doing anything that would warrent being tasered. HA But I do have a lot of concerns about airports, federal buildings, etc.

well... lmao... I would think it would do somme sort of damage.. an elecrtical shock thru you with having a stim in that is attached near a nerve... yikes.. we all will wait on the answer.

Like I said, I, and I am sure all of you, plan not to do anything that would warrant being tased in the future! But, we also know that police aren't the only ones that carry tasers...they are at times a criminal's best friend, as they can tase someone into submission and then grab the person and do whatever. A normal tase is incredibly uncomfortable, but the effects don't last very long...in general, long enough for the police to get someone subdued and handcuffed. But, if there is a major interference from the stim...I don't know what would happen.

I will definitely post the answer to you all as soon as I receive it. I am also going to ask him some other "security" related questions, so I will provide that information as well.

Claudia-
I think that is a question to call Medtronics about. Not that they would have the answer but maybe.
Intersting thought!!!! You made me smile during my crappy day :smile tee

I am pretty sure it would fry the circuitry in the InterStim -- it is possible you would have some nerve damage and have to have the unit removed. If diathermy (deep tissue heating through infrared/ultrasound) screws them up and can result in nerve damage, imagine what a taser would do. :shake:

:bonk: YIKES!!!

Thats really scary! Do you think the same thing would happen if you got zaped by accident like at home? (on an appliance for ex)

I think this could also be a potential liability for police...if they did happen to taser someone that had an interstim and it caused serious injury...but that would be more determined by whether or not the officers were using appropriate force.
I am more worried about the criminal aspect...the fact that a taser can be and is used as a weapon. I am definitely going to bring the question to medtronics attention and see what kind of answer I get from them. I will keep everyone posted for sure!

And Wendi, glad I could give you a chuckle!

I've been tasered-not something I recommend by they way-however I dont have the Interstim (though its being discussed for possible implantation around July). Since its all nerve related I can only guess that it could very well interfere; maybe not on a permanent level though thats irrelevant when talking about someones health and well-being.
When and if you get the answer by all means post and let us all know. I would think that contacting the manufacturer would be the best place to inquire.

Good luck with the surgery.
