Oxycontin (so sick)

Because I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, I can only take Zofran for Nausea and Vomitting. The Oxycontin Extended Release with the Zofran has made me so sick. I was hoping that I would be able to tolerate this medication and get some pain relief. The pain is exactly the same and now I am as sick as if I drank a whole bottle of cheap wine. I can't get the spinning to stop.

Once I start to get sick the Zofran doesn't work at all. I have to wait unitl 8PM for the Oxycontin to exit my system.

Over the years, I've traveled through all of my pain management options as far as medication goes. The only thing left if to go back onto is the Fentanyl. It doesn't make me vomit unless the dose it too high but I did not want to go there at all. If pain meds are not going to help this sort of pain, then I would rather not take them at all. Narcotics are Nasty sometimes!

Kara, I'm sorry this isn't working for you. :( Let's hope the time passes quickly and the Oxy gets out of there... I know that when I took OxyContin, it quit working after like 4 hours, but I guess I have an over-ambitious liver ;)

I had trouble with the timed release oxycontin too, but I can take percocet with no problems, since it is not as long acting. It is basically the same drug, but in short duration form. Maybe that would work for you?

I'm so sorry. On top of everything else, now you have to deal with the room spinning and nausea...you truly deserve some relief here!
I agree with Carolyn...maybe if you drink that cheap wine, it will counteract everything...or you'll just be unconscious! LOL

my friend bruce has just passed away from bowel cancer adn bone cancer exacerbated by HepC. He had the same troubles with Oxycontin and almost all other pain meds, but smoking marijuana right after taking the caps really seemed to ease the nausea and allowed him to eat (which was a rarity in the end).

I was on Oxycontin for a good while with relatively good results. Most of the early side effects disappered within a few days(nausea, diarrhea) The pain control itself lasted about 3 days. The one thing I did not like is that when the pain control drops off, *on me anyway*it plummets, so make sure you have breakthrough meds availabe. I have had good luck witht the Methadone too. Kara what type of zofran are you taking??? The disolve ones work much better than the pill form. it bypasses the stomach and goes right to the bloodstream so it usually works quicker.

most docs only perscribe the oral pills and not the ODT form but give the ODT form a try it may work better for you. and YES our insurance WILL cover it!

Thank You all for your suggetions. Judith, I will give the percocet a try if they will presribe it to me. Erika, I will ask about the dissolving Zofran. Barb, Unfortunately I am allergic to Methadone....The Oxycontin extended 12 hour release is all out of my system now (Thank God!) I just need to find a replacement.

I am going to ask about the regular Percocet and the other form of Zofran.

Kara, I'm so sorry this happened to you. Most narcotics make me sick to my stomach, too, but I am able to tolerate Percocet so I"m hoping Percocet will work for you too without making you sick.

There are many medications that can be compounded and made into a gel; which can be applied to the painful area. The medications bypass the digestive track and can be extremely helpful for many patients.

If your healthcare provider is not familiar with these types of compounded medications; he/she can contact a compounding pharmacy. The one that I use has a list of compounded medications that they prepare for different symptoms/illnesses. If anyone is interested in having their healthcare provider contact my pharmacist, you can send me a personal message through this website or email me at icrelief@verizon.net and I can give you their contact information; with a prescription from your healthcare provider, they mail the medications to your home.

I have had several IC patient friends that have had Valium; Neurontin; Elavil and other drugs compounded into gels; they apply it to their pelvic/bladder area, and are doing well. I'm using the Elavil gel compound with ultrasound and have found it to be very helpful; most patients don't use ultrasound, they just apply it directly.

Kara, i posted this to you in the other forum but I dont know if you saw it. There is a new kind of fentanyl out called Fentora. It comes in a pill form that you put in your cheek and dissolve, like the sucker but in a pill. It is cheaper than the sucker, still expensive but a little cheaper, and comes with a form that doctors can fill out that says the patient is using it for pain relief not related to cancer pain. So some doctors who wont prescribe the suckers will prescribe this.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know about it. I hope they can find some way to help you soon.

A couple of things: have you tried Phenergan or Tigan (generic name I think) or can you have it? Also, sometimes Benadryl helps me with nausea. And, you could put an ice pack on your neck and lie in one place...try not to stand and you might get relief. Anyway, I don't know if any of this works, but it does for me...so anyway, just a thought. Oh, and I agree completely about narcotics being nasty about all the time. I am to the point where I am tolerant to everything except Oxycodone and Methadone. I hate it...Demerol does nothing to help the pain even anymore. We'll be praying for you. The Duragesic patch is pretty awesome because once it takes effect and you change it every 3 days, most of the time I did not need breakthrough meds...but I stayed sleepy all the time with it, and this was back when I was in graduate school for Social Work and drove two hours one way to an internship...so really it was dangerous to be SO sleepy.

I am having similar issues with the medications as well. I cannot take any pain meds though. I am allergic to percocet and oxycodone doesn't even touch the pain. I have now started smoking pot so that I can try to ease the nausea and get some food in my system. I know many who do not condone this, but it is the only relief I can get.

I know this may not work for everyone, but ask to see if Topamax is something you could try. I think Cannabas is a neural drug and so is Topamax and so maybe they'd work the same way. Maybe it would help you, I don't know. It may be safer and easier for you to obtain also.

I have said this before and I know it does not cause this in everyone, but many of us have a lot of chemical sensitivities. So, I'd be careful with Topamax because that is where my kidney stone nightmare started and I have had 31+ kidney stones, all resulting from three years use of Topamax. They were most all analyzed and that is what they were from. However, I do agree with Moonheart in that maybe you should try other options before resulting to illegal substances like pot. It would do tremendous harm to your family if you were arrested for that. Just a thought. There are many things (which I mentioned in my earlier post) that you can do to tame nausea from narcotics. Also, with use of the Duragesic patch (very strong pain patch), the narcotic level in your body is more stable instead of up and down with pills and generally they cause less nausea). Just a suggestion. But I do understand why you'd resort to anything to relieve the pain, so please do not think I am being insensitive at all....just concerned about the legalities. Personally, I think if alcohol is legal then so should pot be legal. People are generally more mellow on pot and people high on pot don't usually create all the crime like alcoholics. Take a look at countries like Denmark, for instance or Holland. Either way, I do hope you might look at these suggestions and feel better soon! Ever since my pain specialist put me on Duragesic, I feel like I have my life back again.

There is also a medication called marinol, it is a prescription med that is derived from cannabis, but this is legal of course. It helps tremendously with nausea from what I am told. I have a few friends who have severe gastroparesis and have to be on this med to help with the relentless nausea, and this really helps them. Just a thought. The only thing is, alot of doctors wont prescribe it unless you have tried all other things such as zofran,phenegran, compazine etc... Marinol is usually given to people undergoing chemotherapy to help with the nausea. But you could ask your doctor about it.
