i recently was disgnosed with yet another infection, and my doctor put me Bactrim, she suggested Cipro at first but the last time I took Cipro I threw up horribly. anyway, I got an infection about this time last year and was given Bactrim but it didn't work, I called the doctors office (a different doctor than I usually go to) and was told they had made a mistake and because there was e coli in my urine the Bactrim wouldn't work and put me on microbid. My regular doctor seemed fairly assured that the Bactrim will work for me this time but now I am beginning to get worried that it won't. I only received the RX yesterday so i know i'm not going to feel 100% today, but how long do you think I should wait to see if the antibotics seem to be working?
thanks!!

hi, when I first got my most recent uti they prescribed bactrim but then a more experienced doctor at an ER told me that most bacteria are now resistant to bactrim and what can happen is that it will kill SOME of the bugs but the rest will grow strong and drug resistant. so levaquin it was.

Yes, Bactrim was the antibiotic of choice for UTI's about 10 years ago, but now that the newer ones like Cipro, Levaquin, and Macrobid/Macrodantin are out, docs choose those since there is less resistance to those. Sometimes Bactrim still does work though... give it a shot, but you might want to try another from the list if it doesn't.
I do know that I took Bactrim for a kidney infection about 10 years ago now, but it made me throw up so badly I couldn't even keep later doses down, so I was hospitalized for IV treatment. Guess I have the opposite problem you do! ;)

I was put on bactrim last october for a bladder infection. Well bactrim gave me a yeast infection, and I was throwing up every 5 minutes, and I had horrible headaches. I refuse to take sulpha drugs for now on. Bactrim was awful

honestly i am a bit relieved to hear that other people have had troubles with bactrim as well. i was afraid it was all my head. i did try the bactrim for a couple of days but today was a really bad day and i just know that it's not working so i called my on call doctor and got a RX of macrobic ... hopefully in a couple days I'll be back to normal!!
thanks for everything!

One of the times that I had a UTI, the doctors gave me Bactrim, it made my IC worse, the doctor didn't believe me, but they did put me on something else after I started to complain, I think it was Lequin, which helped a lot.
