so I was peeing the other day, felt like I had to have a BM, strained a little bit. I looked down into the toilet and there was blood (bright red).

Any blood like that should be checked out ASAP by your doctor. I can't even begin to tell you what it might be without other symptoms and a physical exam. Please call your doc. :)
