I've talked about this before on here but thought I would share it again since there are a lot of avid readers on this site. If you go to amazon.com and search through their books, find a book you'd like to read, more often than not you can find the book being sold as used. You can get hardback, paperback, and books on tape this way at a fraction of the cost. I just bought two books for a total of 10 dollars and they're brand new. I've been waiting to get the new Brother Odd by Dean Koontz, and I got 3 books in one for about 5 dollars total, also written by Koontz. I love, love, love to read and usually I get great service from these marketplace vendors. Check out their feedback, and make sure that they are reliable people to purchase from. It's cheaper than the used book store in my area and I don't have to even get dressed!

I too have bought used books online... it can be really cheap. Before Christmas I stocked up on books to read like that :) Now, with my Interstim surgeries, I'll actually have time to read them...

I've bought and sold books and CD's on Amazon. Luckily, the post office near my work place has a "self-serve" package mailing kiosk, since I rarely get out of work early enough to get to the post office while it's open. That makes it much easier to ship anything I've sold and get it to the buyer quickly.

Barnes and Noble is having a terrific sale. At the top there is a tab that says save up to 80 %. Hubby is buying books right and left from there.

Thanks- I'll have to go to their site. I usually go to the half price book store and buy books, and when I'm finished, I pass them to others to read. (There are about 4 in our group so we don't have to buy too many).

Thanks for the tip, SandyRN. I'll check that out.
Another website that started selling books is deepdiscount.com. I've used them for years for movies and they just started selling books. The neat thing is that all their prices include standard shipping. It's nice to see the same price on the checkout page without getting 'Shipping Shock'.
I just ordered 'Headache in the Pelvis' and one of my favorite movies 'Muriel's Wedding'. The movie was just $6.35 including shipping! I love that website.
I'm looking for something new to read. Any recommendations on Science Fiction (preferably alternate history) or Rosamunde Pilcher type books would by appreciated.
Another good way to get books at a cheap price is to join a book exchange. I belong to two different ones. And I have received and mailed quite a few books to others. Each time that you mail out a book, yu receive a credit to be able to order one. The only cost is the shipping. And most books can be shipped at a media rate of $1.59. The two websites that I use are frugalreader.com and paperbackswap.com. You may want to check them out.warm regards, Mare

I've used amazon and ebay, but I didn't know anything about the book swaps...that's awesome! Thanks everyone for these tips to keep us occupied, and very cheaply at that!

Check out paperbackswap.com. I am addicted to it -- you post books and as people request them you send them out, paying shipping. You receive a credit for each book you send out, then when you want a book you request it and pay nothing! I've gotten many current best-sellers in a matter or weeks or just a few months after release, in addition to a lot of books that I've wanted to read but haven't had a chance yet.
To join you have to post nine books, and you then get three credits to start out, so you can start getting books right away!
If you want more info, PM me and I can send you an email. Otherwise, just go check out the site! Have fun!

We have a used bookstore in town that will buy back your old books for 1/2 the printed price on the book (so if the book is really old and it cost you $1.50 originally, you get 75 cents, and then they sell it for $1.50), or give you credit for books off their shelves. Then they put your books up on their shelves for sale, and so it goes. I've gotten a couple of real gems there. But mostly I use Amazon marketplace. I've never had a problem with a vendor there.

I had to tell you guys thank you for recommending this site. It's really a lot of fun and I've already gotten 2 free books, with 3 more on the way and have mailed out a few myself. It's really fun, easy, and other than the postage of sending a book to someone, it's free!! Talk about a bargain!! Thanks so much for suggesting this!

We have a used book store available where I can take my books I have read and exchange them for half as many. If I take a $5 book, I get $2.50 credit. My problem is that I buy their half price books, then donate them to our little library instead of going back to trade them in --- but it's still inexpensive.

I'm glad you liked paperbackswap! I love it. In fact, I'm on my way to mail a book right now! I go through "slumps" where no one requests my books, then out of the blue I'll get several requests at once. It's a lot of fun!
