I was given Cipro by my dermatologist about a day ago for an earlobe infection (from newly pierced ears). After the first dose I felt gold. No burning. After the third dose however, the burning started and now it's really bad. I was wondering if anyone had problems with Cipro before.
I can't think of anything else that could be causing the burning. Has anyone tried Pyridium OTC (sp?)? Was wondering if it was worth trying.
Thanks.
Oh, and I am taking Tramadol for pain (not really doing much).
Cipro dose= 500mg 2x daily for 15 days

Hi,
I never had a problem with Cipro. However since my IC came slamming out i do have a problem w/flaring w/alot of meds. It's also not uncommon for it to take up to 3 days for whatever your triggers are to start irritating you.
If you know you haven't done anything else different besides the cipro than i think you are guessing right. That doesn't mean you can't find another antibiotic that will work for you w/out flaring.
You may want to call the dermatologist and tell him/her your having a problem with the cipro and would like a different antibiotic. It can be frustrating having to try different meds for the same problem and sometimes ya get lucky and the 1st one works.
I have tried pyridium OTC did nothing for me, but i hear alot of the girls do get some sort of releif with it. Definitly worth a shot. remember trial and error.
About the tramadol my Uro had me try that as well, all it did was make me dazed and confused and i was still in pain. I tried all sorts of pain meds that did nothing ( plus all of us have different toleration levels for pain ) than i tried a pain killer w/opioids ( i read in the all the research i was doing on IC ) in it, and i learned that these meds help better with chronic pain and sure enough it helps me function.
I hate having to take pain meds or really any meds for that matter, but am grateful they are there so i do not have to suffer too bad.
Alot of doctors will not prescribe them or may refer you to a pain managment clinic i didn't have the money for all that so i did my research, got some advice and went in to my Uro armed with as much info about it as i could and she helped me.
Welp hope some of this helped and if you need further insight pm me anytime, i hope you start feeling better soon,
Tracey :)

The worst flare I ever had was when I was on cipro for 10 days. I ended up going to the emergency room. This was long before I was diagnosed with IC. It seems all antibiotics bother me if I am on them for more than a few days. I think my case is a little unusual though.

Thanks for all your feedback.
Tracey, the only other thing "unusual" that I did was eat a little Chinese food. Which could have done it. I am going to give it another day or so to clear up. If it doesn't I plan to call the derm. to see if he can give me something else. I took Levaquin before but had some issues with thst (bad joint pain and a flare which could have been the meds or my period). I hate to stop the Cipro though. My ears looks so much better (not perfect but they look more like ears and not tomatoes).
And on the pain med note. My doctor flat out refuses to give me narcotics or send me to a pain managment person. He was even reluctant to give me the Ultram. He's not a bad doctor. Just is overly concerned that I will, in his words, "become a drug addict". I should note I am just tunred 17 (so I guess that's in the back of every docs mind when it comes to drugs).

If your first reaction was feeling better...could you have develop a yeast infection...they are great at causing burning!
Yes Pyridium OTC in like AZO standard was definatly helpful for me :) Will depend on the cause of your burning at to weather it helps the burning though.
Most people are helped by antibiotics if anything...for me when one bothers me it is usually yeast that is the cause and a probiotic or more probiotic is what I need the most. There are definatly exceptions though and there are some that have a difficult time with antibiotics...I hope that isn't you.

I hope you feel better soon!

I really am sorry you have to deal with this, i had no idea you are so young, I can totaly understand the Doc not wanting to give you narcotics at such a young age, however it also isn't fair to let you suffer.
If i may suggest if you have insurance you may want to see an IC friendly Uro, I went through a few Uro's at the beginning when i finally got info on a support group leader by me she was able to hook me up with the ICA and they sent me a list of all the IC friendly doctor's in my area. It really helped and i didn't have to waste more money & time on a doc that really doesn't understand IC. Not that they don't want to help, alot just do not know how.
It very well could have been the chinese food, i think your elimination process is good, I am also sorry that your ears got infected...but that doesn't mean a different antibiotic won't help. And like Katrina said it's always good to be checked for infections such as yeast or Uti's. I keep test strips at home, alot of us do. Saves me from always having to run into my Uro every time i think i have an infection. If they come out postive or i am really having a problem for days, than i will go in and see her.
If you decide to try a different Uro and have any troubles please let me know.
ICA's number is 1-800-help-ica.
The IC survival guide ( not sure if you know about it ) is also a great resorce and you can buy it on this website, worth every penny!
Dr. Moldwin is awesome and really cares and is not far from you.
Please keep us posted on how you are doing,
Tracey :)

Found out yesterday that it was the Chinese food I ate that was causing all that pain. Go figure. But right as the pain went away, I got horrible urgency but only peed little droplets. Now when I "go" it's no more than 1/4 of a cup and it trickles. I also pee 2 times an hour but feel like I have to go 24/7 and have a hard time with sleeping through the night (have to get up like 60,000 to pee...or try to.) I also have been really tired and slept (more of keeled over on the sofa) for the last day and a half. I think it's the Cipro (said call doctor if unsual tirenedd or urine output change happenes). So I plan to call his office in a few minutes. Have him paged if needed because I can't put up with the "gotta go" feeling any longer.
Tracy, my Uro is one of the most IC friendly doctors I have seen (at least in my area). He was recommended by a different IC site. The only other doctor semi-close is Dr. Moldwin (sp?) who is in NYC. Which is 2-3 hours south of me. I actually really like the uro I see. He listens well, consideres my input, and I think has been the first who I have not wanted to strangle with a cathater :-P (had one nightmare experience with those things and a previous uro.). He is just very stubborn with narcotics. I plan to go in guns blazing next time and tell him I need something stronger because I dropped the Elavil. I see him again in....March....and he has been more on board with pain meds. Last time I went, he said I was very responsible with what he had given me so he put one refil on the script (usually I had to call for refills). It's a step in the right direction at least. Maybe by the time I hit collage he will give me a low dose of something stronger :-P
