:help: I just saw my Urologist yesterday, have been having so much pelvic pain and constant Urinary infections, every 6 weeks, still bloody tinge from my Vagina following intercourse, have been on Elmiron for 6 months, not helping, Vagifem also not helping. Now he says that the best way to go, in my case is to have surgery called Cystoscopy Hyrotdistension, but I don't know anything about it. He told me it's just day surgery and the surgery itself only takes 15 minutes, but because it's a general aneasthetic, they keep you for most of the day. If anyone out there can please explain how they do this surgery, why they do it, what the prognosis is, usually, and what are the side-effects, also a worst case scenario. I'm very flustered by this news right now, don't want to tell my parents, cause my Mom just had a stroke recently and they are expecting their first great grandson's arrival on Feb. 21st!!! Please:help:

Hi Curlette,
You poor thing, sounds like you are really suffering.

A Cystoscopy is basically a flexible camera type microscope (tiny) which is like a very long tube which is inserted into you urethra into your bladder. Once in place this inables the urologist to look down the tube into your bladder through the microscope. he can then look at your bladder in detail and move it around.
As for the hydotdistention this is when fluid is passed through the tubing into your bladder which stretches your bladder to its maximum capasity. Once it is full this allows for the urologist to look at the bladder wall in much more detail. People also say that it temporarily eases off an IC flare as the nerves become decensitied.

i had this done 2years ago and most people have it done to diagnose IC. To be honest with you when I woke up I wasnt in any pain at all but there was quite a lot of blood on my hospital bed but this is because I had a urethral dilation too!! Once I came round I had to stay in hospital intill my pee didnt have any blood in it.
When you first go for a pee after the operation it does sting a bit but no more than it does in a normal flare, and the wee will be pinkish from the blood. It just feels like having cystitis when it burns and stings but once you drink lots of water it eases off!
The next day I was in alot of pain, frequency, pressure pain, uregency etc but this only lasted a week and its honestly not bad at all!

I had to have it done in order to diagnose me with IC so if I didnt have it done then I wouldnt know I had it!!!

Have you been diagnosed with IC yet?? If you havent been diagnosed yet then I will definately have it done because you Need to know whats wrong.
I wont give you any more pain then you already have and after a week or so it will ease off.

I must admit I wouldnt have another one again now, even if the doctor recommended it but thats because it upset my nerves and my vuvodyina got ten times worse( but this is just something else I suffer with which gives me vulal pain so you dont have to worry bout that)!

Dont worry you will be fine, its a very common operation for treating IC and many people have them done so you dont need to worry

all it is, is where they stretch your bladder and look for classic signs of IC. They most likley will take pictures (ask for a copy) and tell you how much your bladder can hold. (mine for example holds 20cc's) After your surgery, you will come out to recovery, once you are alert and awake, they will give you something to drink, and after you void, you will be permitted to leave..

The procedure is called hydrodistention --- you will find information in the Patient Handbook at http://www.ic-network.com/handbook

It really is quite an easy surgery; it doesn't take long, and you should be okay after. Most people just have some bleeding and burning during urination for a day or two afterwards -- I was pretty much fine in about 48 hours and back to my normal activities. Of course, everyone is different, but generally this is a minor surgery and you will do great :)
