I had a cystoscopy with hydrodistension on friday and was put out for the procedure. Well I was not expecting the extreme severe pain that I had when i woke up in the recovery room. The Dr that did it is a new Dr for me. I was seeing Dr Moldwin for the past year who I love and is a great Dr but he no longer takes my insurance. Well this Dr knows that I am in pain because before the procedure I explained to him again that I am on daily pain meds and still having constant pain everyday and I am not improving. Well he said that this procedure will help. I explained how I take Norco for pain but for surgery I would need Percocet. He said that he does not give narcotics for something like this but he would give me a few percocets. Well when I woke up after the surgery hysterical and begging for pain releif he stood over me staring at me for a good 15-20 minutes like I was a headcase saying where is your pain? Like he was shocked that I was in pain. He claims they gave me morphine. I did not see them put anything in my IV. Unless they did it while I was asleep. He said "I cannot give you anything else but take a pyridium." After I was screaming in agony he was telling me that my urethra was extremely inflammed. And him and a nurse put some lidocaine or something there but I was still screaming in agony. The nurse asked him if I could have a percocet and he said" ok give her the percocet" and sounded annoyed. He looks down at my chart and says "You take Klonopin for anxiety?" Like I was a headcase and overreacting with the pain. I actually was given Klonopin by my pain Dr to help me sleep and to help aid with the pain.He says "who gives you all these meds?" This Dr has treated me like crap and my husband wanted to punch him in the face. He told my husband that I was in more pain than the average patient. Well being that I had IC it would make sense especially since I have been in pain for weeks and in pain before I even got to the hospital. He tells my husband that there is definitely evidence of IC and that it is hard living with this but on the otherhand that my bladder looks good. So which is it because he contradicts himself! He mentioned about my very large swollen urethra which would explain why it hurts to sit. I do not want to return to this Dr but I have to get the results of the cysto. I am in severe pain and it hurts to sit and walk. My urine is red and bloody with clots. I know that I should call the jerk Dr but it is a weekend and I do not want to call him after the way I was treated. Does this procedure hurt for others and is it normal days later to be bleeding like this? I wish I could explain how crappy I was treated. I am so ****** off and in pain!

Is this normal after a cysto? I am having a hard time walking because of the pain! It is hard to urinate and takes about 20 minutes to empty my bladder. I am bleeding more! I am so tired of this and I do not feel like going to the hospital.I hate going to the hospital! Do you think my bladder ruptured? My husband went to New Jersey(we live in NY) to visit family and I am alone with my kids and worried. I read online that this procedure is not supposed to be painful! I am upset and nervous because I do not feel right. I feel very weak and I tried Norco for pain and it does not help. A little while later I took percocet and I am still in pain. I was trying to save the percocet because the Dr only gave me a few and it takes 2 of them to releive the pain(5/325 mg). I should of just took the 2 percocet first instead of the norco. I am in agony! I have ultram but I do not think I should mix so much meds. My pain is out of control! I took Norco at 11:30 and the percocet around 1:00. it is now almost 3:00. What should I do? Help!

I know you hate the hospital, but at this rate, it sounds like you need to go to the ER for pain control. It also sounds like you are bleeding more than the average patient -- possibly too much, since you feel so weak -- and you should have that checked out to make sure there is no infection and to make sure your bladder is okay and there are no serious complications from the hydro (like a ruptured bladder).

It sounds like your doctor is a jerk -- I would get the results of your hydro and then find another doctor who is more compassionate.

OMG this dude is a schmuck and a half. I second Jen's motion to go the ER. It sounds like you are bleeding alot more than average and who knows with all your pain if you're retaining which will make everything worse. Please call someone--if you're feeling weak and dizzy you are not able to safely take care of yourself or the kids. Trust me, been there.

Hugs and many prayers that this improves pronto---

Your experience sound eerily like mine... at least the pain part. My doctor prescribed a ton of vicodin for months after the procedure though, but even the vicodin did not help my pain. FIND A NEW DOCTOR asap!

I also experienced severe abdominal pain with walking/movement etc... after the cysto/with hydro... so I guess to me it's "normal" but you DEFINITELY need some pain relief! Goodness!

oh and to me Pyridium was like candy... it did NOTHING for the pain I was in... I think it's absolutely ridiculous that he expects you to only take that! What the ***?!

Aw, goodness..bless your heart! I am so sorry to hear what that jerk did to you! I had a similar problem after my surgery...I had two surgeries in one..I had endorm. laser removal and the cysto and hydro at the same time..I ended up with 4 painful incisons along with the pain from the bladder surgery...I was sent home from the same day surgery even though I could not urinate and was in massive amounts of pain, which they did not give me anything for and had to return 8 hours later to the ER because my bladder would not let me urinate and I was bleeding heavily and I was in so much pain that I was vomitting...thankfully the ER docs were wonderful and admitted me into the hospital, where I stayed for a day and half, it was weekend and the doctor that did my surgery was wonderful, but he was not on call, so I was seen by a macho jerk, who the moment he walked into my hospital room asked me "So...whats the problem here exactly??" as if I was wasting his precious time..I told him the story and at the end of every sentence I made he would reply with "And????" or "Okay okay okay,I get the point" :cussing: He asked me what meds I was taking and when I said that I was given morphine in the ER and had 2 toradol (sp?) shots during my 1 day hospital stay,he interupted me and said "why would you need painshots????" I said "I just had surgery and I am in pain, why else?" and he literally yelled "I do not have to put up with you anymore" and left my room..I was hysterical afterwards, I could not believe what a jerk he was:mad: ...I told my nurses that I wanted to see hospital management and when they arrived, I filed a complaint with that doctor...he is no longer allowed to care for me under any circumstances and my real doctor called me at the hospital and apologized along with giving me his home number..I would certainly go to the ER...and find a new doctor fast! Reguardless of who did your surgery, he does not "own" you and you can choose your own care, which does not need to be under this loser. Good luck!!!! Keep us updated!!

I hope you made that trip to the ER. It does sound like you could have an infection. With an infection, the urine can look like it's almost pure blood. I hope you feel better very soon.

Warm healing thoughts,
Donna

I am stunned by such lack of sensitivity on the part of the doc. Did you ask Dr. Moldwin to recommend someone or did you find the doc on your own because of insurance issues? I would think Moldwin would know some other docs who would be up to his high standards as IC intelligent.
I hope you get some relief. There's nothing like intense pain without relief. It seems to regenerate and make more pain.
Blessings
Maggie

I'm so sorry you are going through this and hope you have found some relief by now! It's such a shame how you were treated!

I agree, if there's any way to bring your husband along to the follow-up, do it.

Hugs,
Vicki

Thank you everyone for all of your responses and advice! It took me a while to reply it was a long agonizing week! But thank god I am getting better! I did have an infection and should have went to the ER sooner rather than sit home and suffer like I did. I waited until monday night and went to my primary care physician which is a walk in clinic. She said that the Cipro was not working and told me that I had an infection. At that point my abdomen was so distended and swollen and it hurt to move or sit. She gave me another antibiotic and told me to finish the cipro and then start the new one. She said that I should page my Dr(urologist) and tell him i am going to the ER. She said that she was worried about the distended abdomen and was concerned that there might be bleeding inside somewhere. She said that the ER could do bloodwork immediately rather than waiting 3 days for her to get the results back. Well I called and left a message with the urologists answering service and the on call urologist called me back. He said it was common to be bleeding like that and common to have an infection after that procedure and soreness was also common. He said that if I was so concerned to go to the ER but that I could just see my own urologist in the morning. He sounded like a jerk also. So I waited until the morning and saw my urologist. To my suprise he was nice. I guess he was in a better mood. He agreed that my swollen abdomen was not normal and recommended a CT scan and sent me for blood work. He did a urine culture that he sent out. He wanted me to see him in his office today. Well instead of waiting days for my CT scan appt I finally did go to the ER the other day. I figured that I might as well get all my results at once instead of waiting days. It took me a while to go to the ER because every morning I would wake up feeling a little better and the swelling would go down so I assumed I was getting better slowly. But then by nightime I would be in agony and the swelling would return and I would kick myself for not going to the ER in the first place. Well to make a long story short all my results came back okay. The ER Dr said I must have had an infection and that by that point it would be hard to tell because I was already taking the cipro and that would affect my urine results. I still have alot of blood in my urine but he said that is normal for this procedure. I had to cancel my appt today with my urologist because my son is home sick today. I asked the receptionist to please ask my Dr to call me at home with the results of my cystoscopy. I want to get my results and make an appt with a urogynecologist that my OB/GYN referred me to. He said this urologist specializes in Endometriosis and IC which would be great for me! I wasted time not going to the ER immediately and the cipro did work afterall. It just took longer. What a nightmare! I will never get this done again! I heard that some people with IC get this done routinely to help their symptoms well it is not for me! I am still having terrible burning and blood when I urinate and it has been a week! But my abdomen looks almost flat again and back to normal finally! It looked like I was pregnant a few days ago. This IC takes such a toll physically emotionally and costing alot of $ in Dr co-payments,etc. I am sure everyone who has IC feels the same. It is so hard explaining to family members and friends about this illness. I feel like they think I enjoy being sick and taking alot of painkillers. One day I ran out of pain meds and was going through withdrawel for the first time. It was the worst feeling and anxiety I have ever experienced. Well my friend caled and I answered the phone hysterical and told her the truth. Her answer was that is terrible why don`t I stop taking painkillers, she does not understand that I need them to live. I am tired of explaining myself. Thank god for this message board! When I found out that I had IC I was thinking that I was crazy and did not know anyone who was going through this. This message board is the best! Thank you all for your kind words and support! I wish everyone a happy and pain free day!

Unfortunately I had a similar problem with my cysto/hydro. I woke up in pain, but the wonderful thing was my doc had already ordered demerol if I needed it. The nurse asked if I would like some pain meds for my pain, I said yes and it was done. I guess once she saw my bladder she realized I had a fairly severe case of IC, and to her, pain management only made sense. And yes I ended up with a UTI after. When I went to the ER they were the ones who didn't want to give me anything for the pain. I was in agony. The only way I can tell I have a UTI is that I start shivering, with nausea and vomiting and fever, otherwise because I have constant urgency, burning that is the only way I can tell it's a UTI.
I hope things get progressively better for you!!

Jessica,

and I thought my hydro was bad! I woke up screaming so loud that I'm sure the whole wing heard me. They said I was given morphine, but I don't believe it. I was given a few tylenol 3's to take with me, but unfortunately I seemed to have developed an allergy to them, and they gave me splitting headaches. I had retention at the beginning too, and it took probably an hour of trying until I finally peed. Luckily the worst of the pain only lasted a day or so. By a week later I was feeling better than before the hydro. I think I was one of the lucky ones, and the hydro actually helped put me into remission (along with the other stuff I was on).

I hope you find a nicer doctor than this jerk! Hydro's are painful for most of us, I dont know how a doctor could not know that.
